Rye City Schools Superintendent Announces 2012 Retirement

Superintendent Edward Shine has announced plans to retire next year.

Last Friday, Rye City School District Superintendent Edward Shine sent a letter to faculty and staff announcing plans to retire next year.

Prior to the school community announcement, Shine said he told the Board of Education at a summer planning session that he intends to retire on June 30, 2012.

Noting his 46 years in the field of education, Shine has served as RCSD superintendent for 15 years.

"It has been my privilege to serve as your superintendent for the past 15 years," he said. "I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in such a warm, welcoming community – one that truly values the importance of a high‐quality education for its children."

Shine said that he is giving the school board ample notice so that it can allow adequate time for a national search of superintendent candidates.

For the 2009-2010 school year, Shine earned $253,623 as superintendent. According to a survey by the New York State Council of School Superintendents, 60 percent of those in the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island plan to retire by 2013.
