More Around Town

Two Rye churches need volunteers and charitable donations.

In the as you sew, so shall you reap category: Resurrection Church is in need of people who can sew for work on a project in the church. Around Town has a not-so-seamless thought: maybe nimble, thimble-fingered members of those sewing groups that meet at Cosi and the library could volunteer their skills. Rye Presbyterian Church is conducting a drive through June 3 to help Grace Church Community Center in White Plains host a five-week summer camp for Westchester-area disadvantaged children.

Grace Church needs bathing suits from size 4T to adult XL, flip flops, sunscreen, towels, bathing caps, swim goggles and other items. Donated items must be new.

Financial contributions are also welcome. Checks should be made out to the RPC Women’s Association with the memo line reading Grace Church. Donations may be dropped off at the RPC reception desk or at the front office.

That gave AT yet another thought: Maybe the Wave Ryeders swim teams at the Rye YMCA could pitch in to help RPC and Grace Church in their bathing suit drive. Ditto the Rye country clubs and the Rye Golf Club Pool members. Combined, they could make quite a splash for a worthy cause.

Who else has thoughts like that? No answer required. Just think about what we said, and not just because we once took swimming lessons from Esther Williams –one of Hollywood’s great mermaids –during a Princess movie-themed inaugural cruise. Now that's a story worth telling, perhaps for another time.
