This Week in Rye Sports

Our weekly roundup of Rye Sports.

Rye athletes had a very busy and exciting week, whether it was out on the softball field or in the swimming pool. Two Rye Recreation Adult Softball league teams' were awarded trophies in their respective leagues. In the pool at Rye Playland, swimmers from the Coveleigh Club, Rye Golf Club, and Shenorock Shore Club all competed and did fairly well overall in the Westchester Swimming Championships.

Men's Softball A League

Poppy's Café was crowned the 2010 A League Champion after sweeping High Intensity in the finals. After an easy 11-3 win Monday, Poppy's had to fight for the 12-11 second game victory. Frank Luciano's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning scored Rich Falcone for the winning run.

Men's Softball B League

It was another battle in the B League finals Tuesday, but Rye Liquor came away victorious, 15-13, over Uncle Henry's for the series sweep. Both teams had to wait a week following an 8-4 victory in favor of Rye Liquor Monday.

Men's Softball C League

Second place regular season finishers Rye Bar and Grill Hackers won Game 2 of their series, 16-12, over Uncle Henry's- Gabelli to force a third game last Thursday. Third place regular season finisher Uncle Henry's- Gabelli won the deciding game, 13-5 ,Monday to clinch a spot in the finals against the fourth place regular season finishers Wranglers.   

Women's League

Postseason play in women's adult softball continues into next week with finals wrapping up by Thursday. The Poppy's Ballbusters were within one game of the finals after a 14-5 victory over Davy Byrne's Rum Runners last Thursday until a 17-12 defeat to the Pub Ryots Thursday. It was a close 4-3 game Monday between the Pub Ryots and Legal Eagles with the Pub Ryots reigning as the victor. The Pub Ryots' momentum continued Thursday as they advanced to the final round after a 17-12 win over the Ballbuster's. The Ryots will face F&A, a team they defeated on July 6. The matchup should call for some very exciting softball.

Rye Brook Summer League Teams

Eight and Under

The eight and unders redeemed themselves this week to post an 8-1 victory over New Canaan Saturday, improving to 7-5.

Nine and Under White

The Rye Brook nine and unders swept a double header Saturday at Kensico. An 11-2 victory in the first game was followed by an 11-9 escape in the second. The two victories were followed by three straight losses, bringing the nine and under white's record to 8-7.

Nine and Under Blue

The nine and under blues were on an eight-game winning streak until a close 3-2 loss Tuesday to the Old Greenwich-Riverside Community Center to currently stand at 9-2. Most recent wins came in the form of a 9-0 shutout over the Hillcrest White team Saturday and 11-3 against New Canaan Sunday.

10 and Under

The 10 and unders lost a close one to Youth Baseball of New Rochelle before edging the Old Greenwich-Riverside Community Center Thunder-Blue, 13-10, Saturday and tying the Hillcrest White team 8-8 on Monday. Rye Brook continued to struggle with Hillcrest, losing 7-5  to currently stand at 9-3-1 heading into post-season play.

12 and Under

It was a tumultuous week for the 12 and unders, who broke a four-game losing streak Tuesday, 12-2, over the Pelham Blue team to currently stand at 6-8-1. After a 9-1 loss Thursday to the Pelham Gold team,  Rye Brook played in the Southern Grand Slam Tournament in Manahawkin, N.J. last weekend, losing to the Stafford Rams 5-1 and 11-7 to the Cape May Stingrays Saturday. On Sunday, West Windsor won 16-6, as Rye Brook fell to a 6-8-1 record.

13 and Under

The 13 and unders played in Rehoboth Delaware's Sports at the Beach Tournament winning three out of six games for a current record of 12-12. Wins were over  the Delaware Blue Hens, 13-11, a narrow 4-3 victory over the Happague Renegades, Saturday followed by a more comfortable 10-3 win Sunday before the Blue Hens defeated them 6-10 Sunday. Other losses came in the form of an 8-0 shutout to the Old Bridge Patriots, and 8-5 to the Greenheads 13 and under team. An 8-2 win Thursday against the Westchester Wolverines put Rye Brook back on track heading into the post-season.

16 and Under

Rye Brook's 16 and under team finished out the regular season with a 4-3 victory over Greenburgh Friday to stand at 10-13 on the season before the playoffs.

 Westchester Swimming Championships

Rye Swim Clubs

The Rye Golf Club finished in fourth place at 76 points behind third place Larchmont Yacht Club, second place Greenburgh, and first place Lake Isle at this week's championships, with Coveleigh Club coming in a close fifth at 78 points. Shenorock Shore Club finished the week in 18th place with 25 points.

In the final individual rankings for girls, Coveleigh Club's Holly Lambino finished in a three-way tie for 14th place in the 10-year old age group. Shenorock Shore Club's Maddy Kenney tied for sixth in the 11 and 12-year old age groups, and Maureen O'Sullivan tied for 12th.

Coveleigh's Isabel Shipman finished seventh overall in the 13 to 14 age groups, while Kelly Wicker tied for 16th with Rye Golf Club's Chihuru Takei. Coveleigh's Norah Murphy finished tied for 19th.

Shenorock Shore Club's Kat DiCaprio finished in a five-way tie for 22nd place out of 25. In the 15-17 age groups, Rye Golf Club's Kelly O'Neil finished tied for third while Coco Darelius tied for eighth with Scarsdale Municipal Pool's Farrell Cooke.

Spencer Lafata led the boys' individual rankings for Coveleigh Club, tying for third in the 11 and 12 year old groups. Coveleigh's Matthew Lantin finished seventh while Rye Golf Club's Jack O'Brien and Gabriele Girotto finished tied for 17th for the 13 and 14 year old groups. Lucas tied for 17th in the 15-17 year old individual rankings.

Each of the Rye clubs will perform in conference competition beginning Monday. Check next week's recap for highlights.
