This Week in Rye Sports

Our weekly roundup of Rye sports.

Teams from around the Rye area have wrapped up their regular seasons and are in the heart of post-season play. Some teams have advanced, while others have come up short. Still, some teams have had their best seasons and are still competing for league titles.

Rye Garnets

Rye baseball headed into Section One play Friday with good momentum after finishing the regular season with a 9-4 win over Pelham to currently stand at 11-9. Jake Meyerson stepped up to have four RBI's heading into Friday's playoff game at rival Harrison before the Garnets went down 9-7 after trailing by as much as six runs.

Rye softball finishes the season at 6-12 after another loss at Ardsley last Friday. There was still hope for a successful season however when the Garnets hosted Nyack in a home Section One playoff game Thursday but the Indians got the best of them in a 16-4 defeat.

The Rye boys lacrosse team is currently on the hunt for a championship season after section one playoff wins over Briarcliff and Pelham behind three goals from Matt McReddie. The Garnets then defeated the Bronxville Broncos 10-5 Thursday and will play Putnam Valley in the Class C final on Wednesday at White Plains High School.

Rye girls lacrosse has also had great success in the playoffs only to fall to a tough Nyack team yet again, 8-6, in Section One playoffs behind two goals from Michelle Mulhearn. Both teams had faced each other in last year's Class C championship. Previous wins included a first round 16-15 overtime victory over Nanuet behind Molly O'Brien, who led the way with seven goals, followed by a 15-6 win over Bronxville. The Garnets have a lot to be proud of and can only improve on their 10-7 season.

Rye boys track and field placed third in the Class B Championships with an overall team score of 65.4. The Garnets came behind Pearl River at 74.3 with Somers placing first, with a 91.2 score.

Garnet girls track scored a fifth place tie with Irvington at 41, 7. Teams ahead of the Garnets included fourth place Nanuet (50,); Nyack (54, 4) in third; Harrison (56, 3) in second, and Pearl River placing first with an overall score of 147, 2.

Two Rye doubles tennis players made it to sectional play, but came up short. Keishi Goto and Grant DeBease lost to Scarsdale's David Goldberg and Jake Gorobetz, 6-2, 7-5.

Rye boys golfer Andrew Gladstone tied with Scarsdale's David Spiro for 27th place in the first round of Section One golf action, 83-86-169 to 81-88-169, respectively.

Blind Brook Trojans

Blind Brook baseball ended the regular season Monday with a 3-1 victory over Bronxville led by two RBIs from Lance Freundlich. The Trojans finish the regular season at 7-9 and have already advanced in post-season play with a 6-4 victory over Tuckahoe Friday. The Trojans next play Tuesday on the road at Valhalla beginning at 4:30 in their next game en route to the championship.

The Blind Brook Trojans softball team's season has ended after a 7-0 loss at home to Bronxville in their season finale to end the season at 1-17. Scores not included in last week's recap include a 16-1 loss to Valhalla. The Trojans will need to look to other players to step up in the absence of graduating seniors and team leaders Jennifer Jond and Katie Ehrmann.

Blind Brook boys tennis player Eric Halpern has had success in the post-season, defeating Bronxville's Jimmy Purdy 6-2, 6-1. Halpern was also successful in quarterfinal play, defeating Byram Hills Alex Meir 6-1, 6-1. Despite losing the semi-final match against Horace Greeley's Ben Gillman, Halpern would not go down easy as he came back to win the second set, 7-5, setting up a third set for a final match score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

Halpern will play Scarsdale's Preston Poon in a third-place match to determine who will be the third and final singles player to go to the state championship.

Rye Country Day Wildcats

Rye Country Day baseball had a last chance to redeem themselves in the New York State Association of Independent Schools playoffs, but lost 1-0 against Collegiate last Saturday, ending the Wildcat's season at 15-7.

RCDS softball has also wrapped up the 2010 season after losing 8-3 to their rival Holy Child. However, the Wildcats loss to Holy Child was a marked improvement  from when the two teams previously met and the Wildcats lost 21-3 on April 30. The team's season record is 7-8.

RCDS boys lacrosse have won the New York State Association of Independent Schools state championship after defeating Hackley 10-7 at Randalls Island Wednesday; the first post season tournament for RCDS. The win not only gives the Wildcats a championship season but a 18-2 final season record, as well.

RCDS girls lacrosse was also successful in the NYSAIS state tournament, advancing to the state semi-finals after a narrow 15-12 win at Fieldston in the quarterfinals. However, Hackley would beat the Wildcats 13-10 in the semi-final game, ending their season at 5-11.

The Wildcats boys golf team, including members Joe Barber, James Kennedy, Colin McDade, Brian Starker, Alex Friedman, and Harrison Baker, won their fifth consecutive state championship at the New York State Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association state golf tournament Thursday in a persuading 389, 410, 3 victory over Hackley.
