Mundinger and Katsuta Lead Garnets to Shut Out

Both players led the Garnets hockey team to victory.

Paul Mundinger and Taka Katsuta led the Garnets hockey team to an 11-0 shutout against the Sabers of Somers/North Salem at the Playland Ice Casino Wednesday.

"I'm pretty happy with it," Garnets Head Coach Jason Friesen said about the win.

Friesen said his team played well in the first and third periods, but he hopes the Garnets can play a more complete game in upcoming matches. The Garnets got away from the game in the second, but picked it up again in the third, with younger players getting extra playing time.

Mundinger's first goal of the night came in the first period at 7:04 on an assist from Tommy Sullivan. Mundinger would score again a couple minutes later on an assist from Brian Powers and Katsuta for a 2-0 lead.

The Garnets wasted no time in tallying points when Katsuta skated from the other end of the ice on a power play at 9:33 to go, putting the Garnets up 3-0 and forcing a Saber timeout. Sullivan and Robert Holmes assisted on the score.

Mundinger netted his third goal with 2:32 left in the period assisted by Powers for the 4-0 score.

Chris Lipari then scored from around the back of the net increasing the Garnet's lead to 5-0 with 1:33 to play. Lipari was assisted by Katstuta and Nick Rosenfield.

Scoring was minimal in the second period. Coach Friesen said it was because of crossing from the blue line, which limited the Garnets opportunities to score.

But the Garnets mustered two goals. The first came at 10:47 from Katsuta on an assist from Powers, and again from Mundinger with less than a minute to play in the period.  Mundinger's fourth goal gave the Garnets an 8-0 lead.

The Garnets closed out the game with three goals in the third period. Ryan Rogers started the streak with a goal at 8:35 and the 9-0 score. Lipri then tallied his second goal of the night, unassisted with 5:44 to go.

Rosenfield would then score the Garnet's final goal with 2:32 left on assists from Katsuta and Luke Urbanczyk, bringing the final score to 11-0.

The Garnets' current record is 6-3-1.  After losing two and tying one, they were finally victorious Wednesday.

The Garnets next play at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Ice Arena against a non-region opponent.
