Garnets Let One Slip Away

Rye Garnets struggle to maintain two leads in 10-6 loss to John Jay Indians.

Two leads quickly vanished for Rye against John Jay Thursday.

In the 10-6 loss, the Garnets led 4-1 in the second before the Indians tied it up at 4-4 in the top of the fourth.

In what was thought to be the game winner, Peter Kennedy scored the run that put the Garnets back on top, 5-4, in the bottom of the fifth off a Leo Matthews RBI to second.

Things turned for the worse when the Garnets allowed John Jay to tie it up at 5-5 in the top of the seventh.

Rye struggled to close it out when John Jay loaded the bases for three more runs and a 9-5 lead.

A valiant effort came up short as the Indians were able to capitalize on walks from Turco and Dylan Maloney who relieved Turco to treat a cut from a spike to the bicep when hustling in for a tag at the plate.

The Garnets were able to score one more run for six total on the day before the Indians ended it at 10-6.

Rye Head Coach Mike Bruno is not letting the loss get him or the rest of the Garnets get him down.

The squad looks to shake off the loss against a top Class AA team and return to their winning ways.

The Garnets game earlier in the season against Fox Lane ended in a similar manner to Thursday's.

"It's just very tough," Bruno said. Bruno emphasized that a loss such as the one his team experienced is nothing to get upset about "You can't let it get you down," he said.

Even though the Indians improved to 9-2 on the year, John Jay Head Coach Geoff Curtis sees areas his team needs to improve upon.

"No disrespect to Rye but we didn't take advantage of opportunities," he said.

One of these was a 1-0 John Jay lead before Rye tied it up at 1-1 in the first to eventually lead 4-1.

"I'm pleased with the outcome but I'm not necessarily pleased with how we got there," he said.

Ryan Breslin was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Garnets.

Starting Garnet pitcher Ryan Crawford pitched three and two-third innings before Forest Henderson took over for two and two-thirds.

Turco pitched two-thirds of an inning.

Rye looks to bounce back on Saturday at Ardsley High School while John Jay is home to Port Chester Wednesday.
