Sports Preview: Rye 2010 Winter Sports

From basketball to ice hockey and swimming, teams in Rye and Blind Brook will have a busy season this winter.

It's the winter sports season in Rye and teams are gearing up for competition. From basketball to hockey and wrestling, here's a rundown of each team's wins and losses, upcoming matches and a sneak peek of what to expect this season:

Team: Rye High School Boys Basketball

Coach: Chris DiCintio

DiCintio guarantees that his team will make the playoffs this season. They won 2 out of 3 games last week and recently beat Cortland Homer High School and Sacred Heart High School to currently stand at 6-6. Key players for the Garnets include Brendan Nagle, Brian Pickup, and Chris Twyman. In upcoming contests, the Garnets will face tough opponents, such as Pleasantville, Harrison, Blind Brook, and Valhalla.

Team: Rye High School Girls Basketball

Coach: Mary Henwood

The Lady Garnets have already been runners-up in the Rye Rotary Classic tournament to two-year champion Irvington High School, just after Coach Henwood celebrated her 300th win. The team currently stands at 8-3 on the season and have upcoming games against Horace Greeley, Somers, and New Rochelle.

Team: Rye High School Boys Ice Hockey 

Coach: Jason Friesen

The Rye High School Boys Ice Hockey team is currently 7-3-1. They were previously 8-6-0, second only to Blind Brook (Rye Town/Harrison). Key players include senior co-captains Paul Mundinger, who just scored his 100th career point, and Taka Katsuta. Upcoming games include Blind Brook (Rye Town/Harrison), Pelham, Harrison, Horace Greeley and Rye Country Day.

Team: Rye High School Wrestling

Coach: Matt Beckley

The team had an overall record of 6-8 last year. The squad has already matched this record this season at 5-6 and could improve their record. The team is a younger one, including both new players and veterans, such as Graham Zahringer (152), Jesse Trumm (145), and Don McSorley (160). Tough opponents include teams in the Scarsdale tournament, Mamaroneck, and Harrison.

Team: Rye High School Boys Swimming

Coach: Carle Fierro

Fierro leads the swim team into its 10th season. The team has an upcoming match against Horace Greeley on Tuesday and Mamaroneck High School on Thursday.

Team: Blind Brook Boys Basketball

Coach: Mike Welsh

The team is coming off an 18-4 record last season. The Trojans are 6-5 so far this season with tough games against Briarcliff High School and Valhalla. Key players include sophomore Antoine Saliba and seniors Michael Tomasula, Lance Freundlich, and Troy Dubrowsky. 

Team: Blind Brook Girls Basketball

Coach: Manny Martinez

The team had a 7-13 record last season and is showing some signs of improving its record this season with five wins and seven losses so far this season. Key players for the Lady Trojans this season include, Jennifer Jonds, Jackie Lavitt, and Lea Saliba. Last year's record was 7-13. Tough opponents on the Lady Trojans' schedule include Alexander Hamilton, Pleasantville and Westlake, who beat the Trojans by double-digits last week. The team will also face Port Chester and Briar Cliff. 

Team: Blind Brook Ice Hockey (Rye Town/Harrison)

Co-Head Coaches: Steve Forzaglia, Rob Striar

This merged team is led by four captains in Connor Strozza, Matt Jacobson, Tyler Ketchabaw and Arran Walsh. Strozza has played well for the Titans, scoring four straight goals in recent 11-0 shutout against the Horace Greeley Quakers. The rest of the season will be a challenge for the team, because nearly every opponent on the Titans' upcoming schedule is a tough one. The Titans are currently 3-4-1 and are on a two-game winning streak after beating Horace Greeley and Pelham High School.

Team: Rye Country Day Boys Ice Hockey

Coach: Gary Bingham

The team currently stands at 4-5 on the season. The Wildcats were 9-11 last season. Key players include goalie Omeed Alidadi, forward Jeff Horowitz, defenseman Cole Kleinberg, center and forward Shay Bingham, and senior defenseman Tomo Yokose. The Wildcats will face challenging opponents in its upcoming games, including Kents Hill, Brunswick, Kingswood-Oxford, and Rye High. 

Team: Rye Country Day Girls Ice Hockey

Coach: Gil Castagna

The team currently stands at 3-6. They will play Pingry and the Hill School in upcoming games on Friday and next Monday. They have three games left against Princeton Day School, who they have already defeated twice this season.

Team: Rye Country Day Wrestling

Coach: Rich Knazik

The team is currently 5-1. Key players for the team include last year's All-American Obinna Nwakeze (285), Zach Tax (171), and Michael Pollinger (189). The team will compete in two upcoming tournaments: the Edgemont Tournament on January 23 and the FAA Dual Tournament on January 30 at Hamden Hall.

Team: Rye Country Day Boys Basketball 

Coach: Vin Minotti

The basketball team currently stands at 9-1 overall. The team just had a big win against Hamden Hall last week - beating them for the first time in three years. The Wildcats will play Millbrook and Hackley high schools before competing in the Coaches Care Cancer Tournament in February at Manhattan College. Key players include tri-captain Jason Rogers.

Team: Rye Country Day Girls Basketball

Coach: Bob TeCarr

The Wildcats team has already had three runaway victories this season. They beat Marymount 44-18 in a December 2 game. In the Fieldston Tip Off Classic, they handily beat one opponent, 54-19, while losing a close game in the Classic's next day game, 45-48. In the John Sabia Tournament, the team beat Trinity 52-30. The team will play home games this week against Dwight and Hopkins high schools. Their last game of the season will be an away game against Holy Child, before competing in the FAA and NYSAIS tournament.
