School Board Member Robert Zahm Resigns

Robert Zahm will step down from the school board before the end of his term July 1.

Rye City School District board member Robert Zahm announced his resignation at the close of a district meeting Tuesday.  Zahm, who has served on the board six years, had already stated he would not run for re-election, but his decision to step down before the end of his term in July was unanticipated.

"I am truly thankful for all the experiences I have had while serving here," Zahm said in a prepared speech before the board.

However, Zahm added that some of his practices, especially with regard to planning a budget, had not always been well received. "Some have said I micromanage," he said. "What I do is tedious work, but it is necessary work."

Zahm's colleagues responded to the news with sadness and words of encouragement.

"You  underestimate your contribution," said Board President Joshua Nathan. "The district is far better off because you have been part of the team."

School board elections will be held May 18; there will be two open seats and so far only two candidates have entered the race.

"The board has a number of options," said district superintendent Edward Shine.  "They can leave the seat vacant until the start of the new term or they can appoint Mrs. Katy Keohane Glassberg, who was running for his seat.  I don't know what they will choose to do."

The next board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 4 and Zahm's absence will assuredly be felt by some.

"I always say the best part of serving on the board is working with such amazing colleagues," Young Kim said. Addressing Zahm directly she added, "You have inspired me; you have made an incredible contribution to this community."
