Rye Board Drafting Booster Club Guidelines

Rye City School Board moved closer to a formal booster club policy Tuesday night. Board vice president Laura Slack presented revisions to draft guidelines for the groups.

Those car washes and cupcake sales better be on the level! Any organization that uses  Rye schools' name to raise money or financially support school activities, sports, and clubs will likely have to register with the Rye Schools superintendent and receive permission from the board for their activities.

At Tuesday night's meeting, school board vice president Laura Slack presented a revised draft of guidelines for booster and extracurricular support groups. They will be required to submit a statement of purpose, their proposed fundraising activities, and events calendar to the superintendent for approval before the entire board.

“Any group of people that are using Rye Schools name as a communication tool or in order to raise money that would benefit the school, we need to know who they are and what their intentions are,” said superintendent Dr. Edward Shine.

It’s unclear how many booster clubs are currently existing. “We won’t know until they submit these forms,” said board president Josh Nathan.

Terry DeBartolo, co-president of the Rye High School Parents’ Organization said there are at least 21 sports booster clubs currently functioning.

Insurance is a major worry for the parent groups as well as managing fundraisers. Booster club organizations will have to affirm that they are not for profit as part of the registration process. DeBartolo said insurance companies were requesting more formal evidence the support groups were legitimate.
