Letter to the Editor: Why I'm Running for the Rye School Board

It is time for the Rye Board of Education to move in a new direction. It is time to vote for a candidate who can contribute new ideas, views and opinions.

I understand the many important decisions taken by this school board and am fully prepared to make the necessary choices from day one.

My goal will be to keep school taxes low without sacrificing programs and services. I do not support implementing a 3 percent utility tax or overriding the state's tax cap. We are already overtaxed and higher taxes do not equate to higher home values.

Too often there has been a disconnect between decisions that are made by the school board and the needs and realities of our schools and families. I am committed to making sound decisions and choices that will benefit all children of Rye City School District.

I pledge to serve those in the community who are too often ignored, the seniors and those students with special needs. Every parent, student, teacher, employee and administrator deserves to be treated with respect and I will work with everyone who seeks my assistance.

We must rebuild the trust between the teachers and administration. I will be a liaison between the district and our educators to repair what has become a fractured relationship.

Together, we can be the instrument of change and open dialogue between the administrators and the community. I respectfully ask for your support and vote on May 20th.

Jason L. Mehler
