Is the Presidential Race Over Before It Begins?

Who would have believed not long ago that President Obama would be the odds-on favorite to win re-election?

Some of those kind enough to comment on my last post talked of “political bias.”  Everyone who comments about politics or public policy or legal issues has such bias, and it will come as no surprise when I say that mine is progressive, populist and Democratic.  I recognize – and welcome – the fact that a lot of readers don’t share my point of view.  Who wants to preach to the converted?  Let’s keep mixing it up!

But here is something I think we may all be able to agree on.  It looks like President Obama is a virtual shoo-in for re-election this year!  Who would have thunk it, not so long ago?  Elected with only 53 percent of the popular vote in 2008 when there was obvious reason to change from the disastrous Bush/Cheney stewardship of the country – financial crisis, predicted recession or worse, two miserable and draining wars, enormous tax cuts for the wealthy – one wondered how he could piece together a majority to win again.  He had disbanded his political operation– internet and otherwise– to focus on governing the country, naively hoping that his theme of bipartisanship would bring us together, forgetting that it is really hard to make love to someone who wants to kill you, while the filibustering Republicans in the Senate were hell-bent on taking him down, even if they took down the country as well.  Once the GOP, led by its Tea Party zealots, took over the House in 2010, it seemed as if Obama was so weak and ineffectual he could hardly govern the country:  debt ceiling crisis, grand $4 trillion budget bargain lost, smaller budget deal lost, credit downgrade.

But thanks to the Republicans, the President now seems invincible!  It is now clear they are putting up a wooden flip-flopper that few can cotton to.  Mitt Romney was always known as a moderate – pro-choice, originator of Romney-care in Massachusetts which got almost everyone in the state covered by means of an individual mandate, willing to raise revenues as well as cut expenses to balance a budget.  But he has been forced by his party’s ideologues to run so far to the right that no one could possibly tell what he believes in or would do as President.  Etch-A-Sketch?  Unbelievable.  Running against contraception?  No wonder he now has an unsurmountable 18 point gender gap with women in the crucial swing states he would have needed to win.  How many women do you know who have never used birth control?  As Governor Dean said last night, if you are a woman, how could you possibly forget or forgive that political lapse?  And there are a lot of men who have a strong interest in contraception as well.

And then Mitt embraces the Ryan budget!  A budget which cuts more than $4 trilllion out of the safety net and other programs for the 99 percent and gives more than 60 percent of it to the 1 percent!  Are they tone deaf or what?  And finally, the President reared up and gave the winning speech which he will reprise again and again over the next six months, calling out the GOP and Romney for the radicals they are, bent on a course to make the rich richer and rest of us poorer.  The Republicans have finally turned moderate, bipartisan, make-nice Barack Obama into a ringing populist progressive.  You know the jig is up when Joe Scarborough, the former Republican Congressman from Florida and current well-connected morning talk-show host, says on the air that he does not know any Republican who thinks Romney can win.

So I ask you:  isn’t the Presidential race over?  Isn’t the critical question now whether the Republicans can retain the House?  And if they can’t, does Barack Obama’s ability to govern this country next term depend upon whether Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats have the cajones to abolish or modify the filibuster rule at the start of the next Senate so they and the President can all get something done and dig this country out of the deep ditch in which we are currently mired?

I agree Obama is not a shoo-in, but your counter arguments are weak.
1. College students who can't find jobs make up much of the Occupy movement, they may not vote for Obama but they certainly won't vote for Romney. 2. Same with black people, at its heart Mormonism has racist foundations. Romney is not going to pick up many black votes. 3. I am glad to know that you know how the middle class view democrats, worked out well for Republicans last time. 4. The media has been in question for 20 years, not a factor. Next. - And Romney WILL run on his record? Pro-choice, pro universal health care, he has a lot more problems with his record than Obama does. Last - The economy is important but as long as it is stable it shouldn't hurt obama that much. The divisions you mention are not new, they have been around since time in memorium, except for energy. this election is Obama's to lose and if there is one thing Romney has shown is that he has a uncanny ability to stick his foot in his mouth and sound like Richy-Rich.

Yeaahhhh, Romney's Mormon faith will be the reason blacks support obama in 2012. Snap out of it man!
SRT April 7, 2012 at 12:40 am
Walt,
I don't have a clue what you are trying to say.
Walt April 7, 2012 at 09:47 am
You don't huh? Well then you must be an incredibly naive person. Anyone else want to chime in and tell Mr SRT why the vast majority of blacks will unconditionally vote for obama?
jeff meyer April 7, 2012 at 01:22 pm
Walt, is it really a problem to say that citizens more often then not will vote for officials that they identify with. I would expect the the majority of Mormons to vote for Mr. Romney not only because of a shared faith but many if not most Mormons live in red states. I would expect the majority of African-Americans to vote for President Obama because statistics prove that African-Americans overwhelmingly vote for the Democratic candidate ever since FDR. Growing up in a Irish-Catholic household my parents voted for JFK in part that they were comfortable that he was Irish/Catholic. Isn't the first rule of electability is that the public must like you. If they dislike you and are uncomfortable with a person then regardless of their policies, religion or ethnicity they will not vote for you. Jeff Meyer Tuckahoe, NY

Not to get into it I'm a college student who would certainly not vote or Obama and may vote Romney so yea and In Bedford I know more people my age who certainly won't vote for Obama but just as many who will. But yea that!
Yewed Kristopherson April 7, 2012 at 01:34 pm
Yea most blacks will vote Obama.. Cept maybe Herman Cain
jeff meyer April 7, 2012 at 02:34 pm
Aidan, any division that you perceive is self inflicted. Can you be specific with your assertions or are generalities the rule of the day? Pessimism, division, racial divide...? All of this is your opinion and appears to be wishful thinking on your part. As I stated the President is no shoe in. That being said I believe that most commenters on this board would not vote for the President if unemployment was at 0 % and if the economy was as robust as it was under President Clinton's leadership. If Marion Barry were the democratic nominee for President he would overwhelmingly carry the black vote.

Obama will not win the change is over in the eyes of many who were fooled once.
Aintthatascam April 8, 2012 at 02:23 am
What needs to be done is to post reminders in all the low income areas of the country to get out and vote on November 13th....
As far as Romney, I don't think he being Morman will cause people not to vote for him, anyone, or anything, is better than Obama. There is more racial stress in the air than in recent times and now we will see the temper tantrums in certain parts of the country, or as I like to call it, "pre Obama defeat syndrome" more hatred, riots, protests because deep down inside, people know that this guy has a close chance of NOT winning.
Diana April 8, 2012 at 01:35 pm
Mitt Romney being a mormon means nothing to be and I am Catholic . What matters is all this dividing, protesting, anger, losing our A rating, economy, obamacare, dictating rights Obama. Now he is turning women against Republicans it is SO predictable that if you have not seen what Obama is all about you have your head under a rock!Or rocks in your head. Oh Gas is 5 bucks. I know some party slaves want to think all is great! Not in this world so I don't really know what world they are in?may be Obamalala land.Oh race card too people are tired of all of this reflecting off the real man behind the mask!Obama, that mask Evil man..
Diana April 8, 2012 at 01:42 pm

The race should be over now : Obummah is NOT a natural born citizen as declared through case law: http://www.wnd.com/2012/04/new-sheriff-calls-for-roundup-of-obama-records/ POTUS is a poser who is committing MULTIPLE felonies by defrauding the American electorate, committing perjury, systematically destroying our Constitution and holding the office of President. Evidence is mounting and it's overwhelming: Obama should be impeached and jailed mimmediately before he does more damage to the security of America and our interests. Read the evidence and see if you can refute it - I cannot and no one else can either. NOBAMA2012 - HOPE FOR CHANGE!! ok: bring on the attacks!
Issy April 8, 2012 at 05:29 pm
You are correct no one can refute the evidence because none is presented. This is just pure nonsense fueled by bigotry.
But how about you give some examples of how Obama is destroying our Constitution? What you hate filled morons do not understand is every-time you open your racists mouths you make it harder for the republicans to unite and defeat Obama.

Diana,i think you are missing many factors in your comments,
1.The republicans have alienated the bulk of women and now they trail 57% for Obama and 34% for Romney. 2.They have lost the elderly vote by a margin of 61% to 27%. 3.The GOP has now lost independent voters,53% to 41%,and to win he only needs to have 27% of their vote. Diana get comfortable because Obama will win 4 more years. .
spark2 April 8, 2012 at 06:45 pm
Romney, wants to lower his taxes more. He only pays 12% now. People who work for a living, like most residents of Eastchester/Tuckaho will end up picking up the slack. That, or our kids will. Nobody was complaining about taxes under Bill Clinton, they were just making money. W bankrupted our country with needless tax cuts and lost two wars in the process. Sounds like Romney wants to cut taxes and invade Iran. Think any of his sons will fight? Vote Republican and ruin our country.
Teleman April 8, 2012 at 06:56 pm
Well, with almost 50% of the electorate either working for the gov't or receiving some form of assistance from the gov't, Bama has a fair amount of votes already purchased.. If you work in the public sector ( funded by the taxpayer) you're probably really happy with Bama- If you live in the real world, you're probably not so happy with how things are.Thankfully, Bama stuck with the Bush philosphy dealing with terrorists- and actually up it a notch- no Gitmo, no trials- just kill them.
Teleman April 8, 2012 at 07:01 pm
Barry is chalking up historical debt- debt that will destroy any hope of prosperity for future generations- hopefully that waste of the first years of his term known as obamacare will get shot down in a few months and we can concentrate on jobs and the economy- one of the reasons the unemployment number looks so good to the uninformed, is that huge amounts of people are dropping out of the workforce altogether- Bama considers this a good thing.
Issy April 8, 2012 at 07:23 pm
First you never explain how Fast and furious is unconstitutional and secondly it was started in 2006 under Bush (was it unconstitutional then?) And while you look into that, how about demanding a copy of his birth certificate?...
And yes it is racist when you demand a copy of a black man's birth certificate, but not that of white presidential candidates. And it is racist when the State of Hawaii, the State Dept and the election commission all confirm that Obama meets the requirements for president and yet you still claim he does not while not providing any evidence in contradiction, just vile and vicious innuendos.

The idea that President Obama had "purchased" the votes of government employees and beneficiaries is absurd as the largest segments of these groups are members of the military, and everyone receiving Social Security and Medicare. It may be 50% of the population (I'm not going to bother to factcheck this), but none of the people in these three categories have any reason to thank, or blame, President Obama for their position. Under Obama, private sector employment is up; public sector employment is down. I would think that many public employees, especially those at the state and local level (like teachers, police, and paid firefighters), are not feeling particularly secure in their jobs at the moment.
A huge portion of the debt and deficits which have arisen during the Obama years can be attributed to policies of the Bush years (tax cuts, 2 unfunded wars, unfunded Medicare Part D, diminished revenues from recession which Obama inherited). Just about the only new spending which can be attributed to policies adopted by the Obama administration are those related to the stimulus, which had a far smaller impact on deficits than the other items listed. Costs related to Obamacare are not a major factor in the deficit as most of those have not even been incurred yet; in any case, CBO has projected that, when fully enacted, Obamacare will reduce the deficit, not increase it.
