Rye Police Blotter: Men Steal Vending Machine, Resident Finds Hand Grenade in Home

A rundown of police incidents in the Rye area.

Grand Larceny

On May 20, an employee of County Coach reported that a vending machine had been stolen from the 75 Cedar Place building. According to the building owner, two men entered the building and loaded it on to a truck.

Motor Vehicle Accident

On May 20, a vehicle on Boston Post Road struck a child. Emergency Medical Services were sent. The child suffered minor injuries.

Criminal Mischief- Arson

On May 23 an employee at the American Yacht Club reported that vandalism had occurred overnight at the club. The bathroom door, trash can, and paper towel dispenser had all been burned.

Bomb Threat

On May 23 the son-in-law of a deceased homeowner on Sonn Drive reported that while cleaning the house he found a hand grenade. Westchester Bomb Squad arrived on the scene and determined the grenade to be inactive and disassembled it.

Simple Assault

Police arrived at Rye Town Park to respond to a fight on May 25. They found a 21-year-old male bleeding profusely and covered in blood. According to the victim, a man hit him with the blunt end of a knife and fled the scene. The man was later found and identified as William Zavala. He was charged with assault in the third degree and was let out on $250 cash bail and has and was scheduled for June 1 court date.

Suspicious Vehicle

On May 27, Rye High School security reported a black Dodge Ram parked in front of the school. Staff noticed that the driver, a white male in his forties with black facial hair, was taking pictures in the direction of the school. Upon approach, the driver left the area.

Burglary

On May 28, two Boston Post Road residents reported that their home had been broken into. The glass sliding door frame was broken, the master bedroom rifled through, and one laptop computer was missing.

Criminal Mischief

A resident of Cowles avenue reported that sometime overnight on May 31 that the exterior of his house had been "egged" and that excrement had been left on his front deck. Damage was caused to his second floor shutters, siding, roof and mahogany wood front door. The reporting person also said that this has been an ongoing problem in the neighborhood.

Larceny from a Motor Vehicle

On June 1 a resident of Beary Court reported that her vehicle had been broken into overnight.  The person removed the woman's hand bag and a set of house keys from her person. The hand bag with all valuables was later found on the neighbor's lawn.

Grand Larceny

A resident of Summit avenue reported that his vehicle was stolen from his driveway at some time on May 31. He had left his keys and cell phone in the vehicle. The vehicle was later located after being towed following a one car accident where the driver fled the scene.

Larceny from a Motor Vehicle

A resident of  Heritage Lane reported to police on June 1 that an unknown party broke the driver side window of her vehicle sometime overnight. Nothing was stolen but things were moved around.
