Rye Brook Man Dies in Retirement Community; Body Found One Week Later

Police said 76-year old resident of Atria Senior Living apparently died of natural causes.

A resident of a senior living community in Rye Brook was dead for at least a week before police found his body Monday night.

Lieutenant Eugene Matthews of the Rye Brook Police Department said James Rappaport, 76, was found on the bedroom floor of his apartment in the Atria Senior Living community at 7:45 p.m. Monday.

Concerns arose when Rappaport's family had not heard from him in one week. Rappaport lived alone in the community, which houses older residents who live independently in their own apartments.

The Westchester Medical Examiner determined that Rappaport had been dead at least a week because of his body's condition. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

Matthews said Rappaport's death is not suspicious at this time. He said that an autopsy is standard in cases of unattended deaths. Police believe Rappaport likely died of natural causes.
