Carvin Challenges Lowey to $500,000 Spending Limit, with Six Public Debates

Westchester-Rockland--Sept. 13... Rye Town Supervisor and congressional candidate Joe Carvin (R-NY17) today issued a challenge to 24-year incumbent congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-WFP) to limit campaign spending in their race to $500,000 per campaign, if she also agrees to a series of six public debates. (This is the second time Mr. Carvin has issued this debate request, and, to date, no debates have been scheduled.) Mr. Carvin has in excess of $500,000 in his campaign coffers and he is raising money daily.
"There is an obscene amount of money being spent in politics today, and $500,000 should be enough to get out the messages of our respective campaigns, if we have an adequate number of public debates," Mr. Carvin said. "Our political system is clearly broken and the principal culprit is money spent to distort public decisions. Congresswoman Lowey and I have very different governing philosophies and life experiences. Instead of spending our time raising money, the two of us should be touring Westchester and Rockland together to give voters a side-by-side comparison of what we plan to do in Washington. The competition of ideas is what makes America great." "My message to voters is simple," he continued "Career politicians in Washington, including Ms. Lowey, have put us in the the deepest financial hole in world history, and they are still digging -- adding more than $1 trillion of debt each year. If we want to get this economy growing again -- if we want to create jobs -- we need to elect people with the courage to face the economic challenges of our constituents head-on. That's it."

Mr. Carvin cited a recent Harvard Business School study on US competitiveness where 70% of respondents cited the lack of effectiveness of our political system as one of the principal reasons for the US becoming less competitive. His campaign issued a news release on Wednesday citing a World Economic Forum (WEF) global ranking of the world's most competitive economies. The U.S., the world's largest economy, fell two positions to the 7th spot in that survey, marking its fourth year of decline. "U.S. politicians spend more time raising money than tending to the needs of their constituents and the nation as a whole," Mr. Carvin said. "Instead of Ms. Lowey and I spending hours on the phone over the next two months dialing for dollars, we could be out publicly debating issues and solutions together. The decision is hers." Mr. Carvin and Ms. Lowey are competing for New York's new 17th Congressional District, which includes all of Rockland County and most of Northern Westchester.
