The 1907 Van Norden Carriage House is JHC’s primary learning facility with a seating capacity for 150 students. It is currently used for a range of curriculum appropriate school programs in American History, Architecture and Environmental Stewardship for kids aged 7 – 11. Many of the schools that take advantage of JHC’s programs are public schools. The placement of the garden behind this building will expand the actual teaching space of the site enhancing the overall experience.

The garden will be named Grace's Garden as a tribute to Gilded Age Jay Estate resident Grace Talcott Van Norden in recognition of her philanthropy and that of her family. In the early 1900s, she and her husband Warner welcomed needy children from NYC to their home in Westchester for many happy summers of fresh air and carefree play.
