Outdoor Movie - "The Goonies" and Balloon Sculptures

“The Goonies” are coming to Rye Town Park.  And they’re bringing: secret caves; an old lighthouse; a lost map; treacherous traps; and, hidden treasure.  What an adventure!

Everyone is invited to go to the northeast end of the Park’s “Great Lawn” on Monday, July 14th and enjoy the film “The Goonies” on a big screen with great sound.  The rain date is July 21.

The movie will start about 8:30 p.m. – as soon as it’s dark enough view properly.  Admission to the movie is free.  People living near the park are urged to walk.  Parking after 4 p.m. is $5.  Permit holders pay $4.
People are invited to come at 7 pm for picnicking and enjoying balloon sculpture making with Scott Kazan.  Insect repellent is recommended.

The outdoor movie program is being presented by the Friends of Rye Town Park, and sponsored by Carpet Trends of Rye.  The park is located at 95 Dearborn Ave. in the City of Rye.

Here’s a brief description of the movie’s plot.  The Goonies, a tightly knit band of friends are breaking up. With greedy developers about to raze their neighborhood, this feisty group of under-privileged kids - whose housing project is about to be destroyed --is spending one last adventure-filled, drizzly Saturday morning together.

After they find an authentic 17th-century pirate map they begin a dazzling, daylong quest for a treasure rich enough to save their homes.

They enter a subterranean world filled with caverns, crooks, skeletons, booby-traps, a once-mighty pirate ship and a milquetoast of a monster with swivel piglet ears and a face only Frankenstein could love.

“The Goonies” was directed by Richard Donner from a script by Chris Columbus and a story by Steven Spielberg.  Released in 1985, it was among the top-ten grossing films of the year.  It has become a cult favorite over the years.
