(VIDEO) The Derivatives Play 12th Show at Rye Town Park

Local residents enjoyed a free night of live music and dancing as part of Rye Town Park's Twilight Tuesdays series last night. The series runs all summer.

The Derivatives did not let their fans down at Rye Town Park last night. When 9 p.m. rolled around Port Chester’s infamous Goldie Solomon whispered something to singer John Van Bomel and got him to play just one more song, and then they squeezed in another two more.

Even though the cutoff is supposed to be 9 p.m., how could the Parks Department staff say no when so many people were still dancing and singing to the music?

“We love doing this and seeing people singing and dancing,” said Van Bomel after the show. The band plays a mix of classic rock, soul and blues music, much of which had older members in the crowd showing off dance moves from their youth.

The Derivatives have played Rye Town Park’s Twilight Tuesday series for 12 years and are happy to perform for their friends, neighbors and proud families.

“I look forward to this event every summer,” said Katie Van Bomel, John’s 27-year-old daughter. “To be able to see people I have known for so long in a beautiful setting and be able to dance and catch up while my dad sings is great. I know my dad and the members of the band really love and appreciate seeing their community enjoying the music they play.”

The band started with guitarist Mike Giliberto and bassist John Barry, two now-retired Wall Street traders who created “The Off Wall Street Band,” in the 90s. Van Bomel, a lawyer and Rye resident for the last 20 years, got to know the founding members and today’s other three members through their children who were on the same sports teams and in school together.

They came up with the name Derivatives as a joke about being a cover band that started with Wall Street traders. They joke they are not “toxic” like the derivatives that helped create the mortgage crisis five years ago.

Today the band consists of singer and keyboardist Carol Manire, drummer Adrian Delgado, Van Bomel, Giliberto and Barry.

They play many local events for the Town and local churches and organizations, including the Rye Halloween Window Painting event every fall.
