Amusement park offers something for children of all ages.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino officially opened the 84th season of Rye Playland Amusement Park when he cut the ribbon during a brief ceremony Saturday. Thousands of people poured through the gates and headed for their favorite rides under a beautiful sunny Spring sky.

I LOVE Playland. Have not been there in YEARS. Hope to sneak a day or two this Summer. You people there are lucky not to live in New Canaan. That is why I am not able to have any freedom. I am not normal. Yet, they will not do for me and I am stuck home or shopping or errands when I am not at work which is the ONLY place I should be doing work. GLEN

I had a great time when I went last week for their dry. I especially love seeing the 7 rides that were there back in 1928, and it was nice seeing people enjoying themselves at the Pier Restaurant. If you can't get away on vacation, it kind of gives a feeling of being on one.

I remember when Vincent Bellew used to sponsor trips to Playland back in the 60's.we used to wait all summer for that day,and the rides averaged about a quarter! Truly hope it never shuts down,so many memories.

The park was privatized many years ago to Marriott. It did worse then it did under Westchester County.

Playland was very busy today. There was a canoe that capsized in the sound off of Playland, late this afternoon. The two occupants swam to shore safely. Great response from the local authorities. The Rye police were out in full force giving tickets. They were too busy giving speeding tickets to give parking tickets.

While it's true Playland is unusual because it includes landmarked amusements, it is fundamentally a valuable waterfront county park. If the consensus is to privatize Playland, then perhaps we should consider privatizing other Westchester County Parks & business including the six money-losing county-owned golf courses, eight pools & beaches, Pound Ridge Reservation, The County Center, Westchester Airport, and the Westchester Medical Center. Fact is, what's required to run Playland successfully may not be that different than what our county government is supposed to do anyway: negotiate employee contracts, budget responsibly, maintain critical infrastructure and attract visitors.
