Editor's Notebook: Week in Review

A recap of this week's top stories on Rye Patch

Rye Patch had several stories this week about the state Democratic convention. The party was set to choose nominees for Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor and Governor. The race for Attorney General included five candidates-- Eric Dinallo, the state's insurance superintendent under Governor Eliot Spitzer; Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice; former federal prosecutor John "Sean" Coffey; Richard Brodsky, a fixture in the State Assembly and Westchester County politics, and New York State Senator Eric Schneiderman.

The party ultimately decided to let all five candidates run in the primary, but nominated Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy for Lieutenant Governor and current Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for Governor. Cuomo is currently leading in the polls against several GOP challengers, but November is a long ways away.

One of our most popular stories this week was Staying Fit and Fabulous in the Golden Years. May 26 was National Senior Health and Fitness Day and the YMCA offered a wide array of programs for active seniors. Even with hip and knee replacements and pacemakers, YMCA seniors like Jill Doornick, Rose "Chickie" Falicglia and Lila Gross keep in good health by enjoying classes like Zumba, Yoga and Yo Tai Lates. These seniors can certainly put twenty-somethings to shame. The YMCA offers regular programs and classes for seniors, so contact the Y to find out more.

We also did a story on the 26th annual Carroll F. Johnson Scholastic Achievement Dinner. The dinner, organized by the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents, honors 100 high school valedictorians and salutatorians in Westchester every year. Among those honored were Rye High School students Samantha Lee and Alda Pontes; Rye Country Day School's Isabel Beshar, Grayson Clary and Blind Brook High School's  Rachel Lumish, Justin Starr.

Our other stories this week included coverage of a state bill that could increase food donations from restaurants who usually throw out leftover food because of legal liability. We also covered the Wainwright House's program for helping Iraq veterans cope with the aftermath of the war, and gave you a few recipes for your Memorial Day barbecue.
