Wednesday

“Get Active after Cancer” is the theme of Wednesday’s Wellness program, 7- 8 p.m. in the Child Care Room at the Y.

The session will offer advice on ways to improve the function of the immune system and help control weight which can influence the risk of cancer recurrence and survival.

Studies show that exercise improves long-term survival and quality of life by reducing fatigue, enhancing self-esteem, improving fitness and reducing stress.

Additional Y programs for cancer survivors are in the planning stages, including the launch “Livestrong at the Y,” a joint collaboration between Y-USA and the Livestrong Foundation, the survivor network started by cycling champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstong.

The free 12-week pilot program, open to members and non-members, starts July 26 and will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:15-2:30 p.m. at the Y.

The goal of the program is to help participants regain their health and well-being through physical activity and support in small group settings. The aim is to build muscular strength and endurance, carsiovascular endurance, increase flexibility and ultimately improve quality of life.
