Becoming Unplugged by Hurricane Sandy by Amy Reissner Holistic RN Energy Healer

The Blessings & Teachings of Hurricane Sandy are many. As a mom and energy healer, I observed interesting family differences that I liked and want to recreate without the Force of Nature!

While Sandy has wrecked havoc these past couple of weeks with people's homes, businesses and lives, it has also created an opportunity to reconnect with what is truly important.

Relationships between people seem to have shifted during this time. The power outages prevented phone, computer and cell phone access. My family initially became unglued from becoming unplugged! I did not realize how attached to the computer and cell phones we had become.

It is true that I did not particularly enjoy the effects of Sandy, such as:

  • a cold house
  • cooking on my gas stove by lantern
  • no computer
  • no cell phone
  • no TV
  • reading by flashlight
  • and not being able to communicate even with a land line.

By the 3rd day, I found being unplugged had some benefits to family life. We had longer intervals of better interpersonal communication. We lingered over dinner and talked. My kids, before Sandy, would have been 'bored' by the idea of playing board games like Monopoly, Scrabble or even Brain Quest! We laughed and had lots of fun.

Now I am not suggesting that we were not relieved when after 8 days of power loss, that our power returned. I would not be able to sit here and write my blog as easily.

But it does give 'power' to the thought of examining our family time. Perhaps one evening or weekend day of 'unplugging' is a consideration that could bring families closer to each other. Truly relaxing and enjoying each other's company without interruption from emails, texting, tweeting, and blogging.

But habits die hard. I am hopeful that my family will not need another Force of Nature for us to become close again, as in the pre-techy age. Perhaps 'turning off' the power will help us better 'tune in' to each other in a very real way. Eye to eye conversation leading to heart to heart communication can be a very real outcome for many families.

We had the wherewithal to face Sandy!

Do we now have the courage to 'power off the electronics' in order to 'power up with love?!'

Let me know what you think? I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,

Amy

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something

Let's look at the appropriateness of this post. First, it's clearly an ad because it points to aRead More specific insurance agent at a specific agency to contact. Second, it attempts to hide being an ad behind what may be useful information (or not). Third, the "person" who posted it doesn't use their real name. Instead, they use a pseudonym Divorce Information NOW. That doesn’t seem terribly reassuring to me. This the third advertising post on the “announcements” space since Rye Patch converted to the new site layout. Seems a bit of a mess to me. But hopefully someone will come along and figure out who the real poster is, their link to the advertised agent and agency, and then delete the post. After all, if it’s an ad, it should be labeled as such and the poster should pay for having it run. If that doesn’t happen, Patch won’t be able to pay its employees to keep real content on the site.

Don't feel so bad. The Patch doesn't even acknowledge that PC is a waterfront community. We've allRead More been shorted.
