Osborn Home Invasion Victim Fought Off Attacker

“Of all the people, he could have picked, he chose the wrong one.”

Though her name has been withheld by Rye Police, Commissioner William Connors said the 72 year-old female victim of a home invasion at the Osborn retirement village struggled mightily against her attacker during a Monday morning home invasion. 

Connors said the woman was apparently able to disarm her attacker of a kitchen knife despite suffering significant, non-life threatening injuries. 

Mark Zwerger, CEO of The Osborn, said the woman has lived at the facility for about ten years in one of the campus’ independent living units.  Zwerger described her as “on the younger side” and active.

“Good for her that she was able to defend herself,” he said.

Police are still looking for the home invasion suspect- a man dressed in dark clothing first noticed by Osborn security. The man apparently entered the property on foot, bypassing the vehicle security checkpoint.

Zwerger said Osborn security staff called Rye police after trying to locate the intruder themselves. The man later turned up in the victim’s apartment after entering the basement garage through a door Zwerger says is normally locked. 

Rye police say there were no signs of forced entry into either the garage or apartment, but added assumptions the suspect may have had a key are speculative at this time.

Police said the victim told them she awoke in her fourth floor apartment and encountered a man in the hallway. The victim said the man had a kitchen knife -which was dropped after the two struggled. The woman sustained significant facial injuries and had been released from Greenwich Hospital by Monday evening. She is currently with relatives who live in the immediate area.

Police released an image of the suspect captured by surveillance cameras in a basement garage. Captured at nearly 1 a.m. Monday morning, the picture shows what appears to be a man in a dark hat, long sleeved-jacket or shirt and pants entering a doorway while carrying something in his right hand.

Commissioner Connors confirmed a bloodhound unit tracked the suspect’s scent from the apartment building to a location outside the Osborn on Boston Post Road. From there the suspect may have fled in an automobile.
