Rye Drivers Cut Off Car Idling for Earth Day

Rye is one of 4 Sound Shore communities involved in an upcoming "No Idling" campaign.

Rye is one of four Sound Shore communities participating in an upcoming No Idling Awareness Day on Monday, April 23 in conjunction with Earth Day. “As we mark this event, which has been scheduled to follow the annual commemoration of Earth Day, it is a good time to think about the legal, practical, and environmental impacts of unnecessary idling," said Rye Police Commissioner William Connors.   So what does car idling have to do with Earth Day?  We've all done it. After circling in vain for a parking space, you pull close to the curb, turn on your hazard lights and leave the car running while you run into the dry cleaners or coffee shop for quick errand. It's not that big a deal, right? Wrong. Forget that excuse. There are a whole host of …

Rye Police received a number of reports from residents robbed of items left in their cars.

Rye Police Lt. Joseph Verille said the possibility of a connection between four cases of thefts from parked cars, some in close proximity to each other since September 30, is "unknown at this time." Three cases occurred on September 30 and another was reported on October 3. At 11:10 a.m. on Friday, September 30, a resident on Sanford St. reported cash, and iPod Touch and auxiliary cable taken from an unlocked car parked overnight in their driveway. Soon after, police received took a report from a resident who parked their car near High St. and Maple Ave. overnight. If people are leaving these items in their cars, then they are asking for trouble. This is nothing new. Car robberies have been going on for a while now and we have been warned enough. I can't feel sorry for anyone who does not take precautions.   more ›

Updated: Six-Year-Old Rye Girl Attacked In Front Yard By Pair Of Coyotes

The girl was playing outside with friends Friday night when the animals 'singled her out for the attack' and tackled her, according to police.

A six-year-old Rye girl was tackled and bitten by a pair of coyotes Friday night in front of her home on LaSalle Avenue, Rye police said. The animals bounded from a nearby sidewalk to the girl's front yard, where she was playing with friends at 9:15 p.m. As the girl began to run, the two coyotes "singled her out for the attack" and brought her to the ground, scratching and biting her amid screaming and confusion until an adult was able to scare them away, Rye police Commissioner William Connors said. The most likely reason the animals had for targeting her was her small size. The girl was brought to Greenwich Hospital, where she was treated for bite marks to her shoulder, upper thigh and neck, as well as scratches and claw marks on her ear…

Three female suspects were caught leaving the school at midnight after tripping a burglary alarm.

Three teenage girls were arrested for felony burglary April 30 after they were caught at midnight, walking out of Rye High School carrying items they'd allegedly looted from lockers and the school music room. Police were alerted at 11:40 p.m. by burglary alarms the teens had triggered when they ducked into the school through an open window. A sergeant and several patrol officers responded and set up a perimeter around the building. After an officer located the open window, police who were watching the east corner of the school spotted the three dark shapes of the teenagers leaving from another exit. The girls were placed under arrest and taken back to Rye police headquarters while officers at the school brought in a Harrison K9 unit for a …
