Are the coyote and wild animal populations actually growing though?
Coyotes have long been the bane of suburban neighborhoods, but some of the recent animal sightings in the area—black bear in Nanuet and Katonah, a rabid fox in Briarcliff Manor, and the legendary Greenwich mountain lion—make the coyote look more like a roughneck cousin of the family dog. As scary as those other animals are, however, they have yet to attack two young children, as coyote did last summer in Rye, setting off a wave of panic. So for now, coyotes will likely remain public enemy No. 1 for local residents. Mary DeCesare has lived in Tarrytown for 20 years and is known as the “coyote lady.” As the vice president of the Carrollwood Homeowners’ Association, she has made ridding the neighborhood of coyote her cause. “It doesn't take a…

Rye police shot and killed the coyote last week, but did not release information about the shooting until Thursday.
Rye police shot and killed a coyote near the entrance to an upscale townhouse development last week. A concerned caller telephoned Rye police at 9 p.m. on Friday night after spotting the coyote on North Street, and a responding officer found the animal near the entrance of the Ives. The animal was removed; authorities don't believe the coyote was infected like others that have been shot or captured since a pair of attacks on young children – and an earlier attack in which a coyote killed a dog at the Osborn Retirement Community – in late spring and early summer. Police did not release information on the shooting until today. The …

The girl was playing outside with friends Friday night when the animals 'singled her out for the attack' and tackled her, according to police.
A six-year-old Rye girl was tackled and bitten by a pair of coyotes Friday night in front of her home on LaSalle Avenue, Rye police said. The animals bounded from a nearby sidewalk to the girl's front yard, where she was playing with friends at 9:15 p.m. As the girl began to run, the two coyotes "singled her out for the attack" and brought her to the ground, scratching and biting her amid screaming and confusion until an adult was able to scare them away, Rye police Commissioner William Connors said. The most likely reason the animals had for targeting her was her small size. The girl was brought to Greenwich Hospital, where she was treated for bite marks to her shoulder, upper thigh and neck, as well as scratches and claw marks on her ear…

Well, this has all begun to sound familiar, and repetitive. Thanks to all who commented realistically about the issue of wildlife and suburbia and how people try to make informed decisions about risk, safety, morals, balance, etc. To those who stand against any human predation against wildlife, we hear you. These comments will now be closed.   more ›
