Video: Local Camps and Parents Take Safety Precautions After Coyote Attacks

Local camps are arming their counselors with tools, such as whistles, to scare away coyotes, while parents are keeping a watchful eye on their children.

As the concern lingers over the two recent coyote attacks in Rye, local camp organizers and parents are putting preventive measures in place to make sure no more incidents occur. Patch.com talked to the directors of the YMCA camp at Osborn School and the Architectural Camp at the Jay Heritage Center to see what they are doing to make sure campers have a safe, positive summer experience. The most important advice given to all was to be aware of your surroundings. Of course I believe in taking precautions regarding any type of wildlife, but let's not overdo it. It's typical of New Yorkers to engage in overkill anytime they feel there's an issue. Do your homework. If you trap or kill a coyote, how do you know it's the very rare assertive one? So what will happen then - kill them all? Updated: Six-Year-Old Rye Girl Attacked In Front Yard By Pair Of Coyotes

The girl was playing outside with friends Friday night when the animals 'singled her out for the attack' and tackled her, according to police.

A six-year-old Rye girl was tackled and bitten by a pair of coyotes Friday night in front of her home on LaSalle Avenue, Rye police said. The animals bounded from a nearby sidewalk to the girl's front yard, where she was playing with friends at 9:15 p.m. As the girl began to run, the two coyotes "singled her out for the attack" and brought her to the ground, scratching and biting her amid screaming and confusion until an adult was able to scare them away, Rye police Commissioner William Connors said. The most likely reason the animals had for targeting her was her small size. The girl was brought to Greenwich Hospital, where she was treated for bite marks to her shoulder, upper thigh and neck, as well as scratches and claw marks on her ear…
