Westchester Students Honored with Excellence in Programming Award

The National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) Northeast Conference declared Westchester Community College's Events Board (WEB) the best student-run programming board in the country.

In addition to its nationally-recognized academic program and grants from Con Edison and The J.M. Kaplan Fund, Westchester Community College recently earned another accolade to add to its litany of accomplishments. Westchester Chinese-American Community Welcomes the Year of the Dragon [VIDEO]

Approximately 500 people gathered to welcome the year of the dragon at the Westchester Association of Chinese Americans' 23nd annual Chinese New Year program at New Rochelle High School on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Hui Huang of Croton-on-Hudson and Erqian Na of Yonkers hand-rolled, filled and steamed dumplings for an eager crowd of children in the cafeteria at New Rochelle High School on Saturday. "You like them, yes?" Huang asked Brian Chin, 5, of Mamaroneck as he and his brother Ethan, 8, took turns crimping the doughy edges of the dumplings. "Be careful, it's hot," she warned Katie Yacoub, 11, of Eastchester. Nearby, Eileen Wang of Valhalla played a modified game of peekaboo with her 3-year-old daughter Emma who was trying on an elaborate, child-sized lion mask at the dance workshop. Bowling for Dollars and Sports

Inaugural event supports Fox Lane Sports Boosters Club.

Spins Bowl at Grand Prix New York in Mount Kisco was the site of a day-long fund-raiser to benefit the Fox Lane Sports Boosters Club. Several sessions were held throughout the day and into the evening to raise money for athletic field renovations at the Fox Lane Middle and High School campus, and to fund two new athletic scholarships for graduating seniors. Local families were joined by about 10 West Point Cadets during the early session, while later sessions included a live band, food buffet, contests and a laser light show.

There's No Such Thing As A Bully: An Ideal World

The author contemplates the importance of parents working together for the good of the next generation.

In an ideal world, there should be no such thing as bullying. A child would be so supported and positive they would never feel the kind of hopelessness that causes anyone to take their own life. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world. If we did, the parents of Phillip Parker, a student at Gordonsville High School, TN, would have spent past weeks planning his future instead of his funeral. On occasion, this column has inspired opposing commentary that expressed a “kids will be kids” attitude. Some have shared stories of bullying when they were kids and how it made everybody stronger. VIDEO: Blind Brook Middle Schoolers Mob Port Chester Stop & Shop

100 Blind Brook Middle Schoolers raised money for the Carver Center Food Pantry.

Sunday afternoon at the Port Chester Super Stop & Shop wasn't just crowded, it was mobbed. Flash mobbed that is, by 100 Blind Brook middle schoolers intent on getting attention for the Carver Center food pantry. Cereal-shaking cheers and syncopated dance moves from the kids definitely got the right result. Stop & Shop donated $1500 to the "I Scream for Breakfast" campaign making it possible for the Carver Center to serve healthy breakfasts to deserving children in need. Pleasantville HS Hosts Inaugural Youth Wrestling Tournament

Nearly 300 young wrestlers representing five counties participate in the first-annual Pleasantville Youth Wrestling Tournament.

The first-annual Pleasantville Youth Wrestling Tournament drew 288 boys and girls between the ages of five and 12 to Pleasantville High School on Sunday morning. The screetchy sounds of blowing whistles were at times drowned out by screaming coaches and parents at the action-filled event. Competitors came from Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and Fairfield counties. They competed in five divisions based on age, with each division broken down into matches based on weight. The event was hosted by Pleasantville Youth Wrestling.

UPDATE: Gas Leak Under Control at Mamaroneck High School

Evacuation and emergency dismissal plans were activated.

UPDATE: 10:00 p.m. Mamaroneck High School will be open on Sunday, Jan. 22 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for students to come retrieve belongings left on Friday. UPDATE: 3:30 p.m. The source of the leak was an underground pipe that was disturbed while work was being done today, said Con Ed spokesperson Sara Banda. Earlier in the week, the school reported a leak in a two-inch pipe, located near the administrative offices at Mamaroneck High School, and Con Ed came to the school to provide a temporary solution until a contractor was hired, said Banda.  As per Con Ed protocol, she said, crews must be on site daily to supervise the work.
