Kathi, we are so sorry to hear about your son Michael. I read about him in the Rye Record. I still have a subscription to that even though we've been in Houston for 17 years now. Townes, a 25-year veteran of the fire department, was one of more than 20 firefighters who raced to the scene of a fire early this morning on Lorraine Avenue. Fire officials said Townes collapsed suddenly and died at Mount Vernon Hospital despite efforts to revive him. Officials noted that Townes had recently passed a mandatory physical exam and city officials said the married father of three children was one of the city's outstanding firefighters. In White Plains, firefighters there were quick to post a note about Townes on their Facebook page…

Journalist Andy Rooney Dies At 92

Andy Rooney, a staple of "60 Minutes," dies following complications from surgery.

Andy Rooney, a long-time resident of Rowayton who still had a home there, died on Friday in a New York City hospital from complications following minor surgery. He was 92. Rooney was a staple of "60 Minutes", capping the show off with his brilliant and often funny commentary about the little things in life that we sometimes make a big deal of, and the big things in the world that are sometimes really small. Rooney, who began his "60 Minutes" commentaries in 1978, railed about how unpleasant air travel had become. "Let's make a statement to the airlines just to get their attention. We'll pick a week next year and we'll all agree not to go anywhere for seven days," he told viewers. October 2, 2011, after his 1,097th essay, Rooney announced …

Mary Ann Ilse Remembered at Rye City Council Meeting

Mary Ann Ilse, first woman to serve as mayor of Rye, is remembered at the Rye City Council meeting

Release from Rye City Hall: On Wednesday, October 19 at the regular meeting of the City Council, Rye will have a moment of silence and remembrance for former Mayor Mary Ann Isle who passed away on October 7. After a term on the City Council, Mary Ann served as Mayor from 1985 to 1989 and was the first and only woman to serve as Mayor in the City's 70-year history. "One of the things I learned from Mary Ann 25 years ago is still is paramount today. In this day and age of political party ideology or self-proclaimed independent points of view, the real key to governing and leading is to not just have a point of view - everyone has one, but to work with people, build consensus and get things done that are in the best interests of those you …

Since this is a thread about Mary Ann Ilse, let me praise her lest we all forget her years of service as we lose ourselves in other debates. Mary Ann and I served for two years on the Council together, and we had our differences on public policy. But as I said at the City Council meeting on Wednesday night, she showed political courage on issues large and small, from making a public service of …   more ›

Remembering Steve Jobs, American Icon

One of Silicon Valley's greatest electronics and computer-industry pioneers succumbs to pancreatic cancer.

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer, now Apple, Inc., died on Wednesday, about 9 months after he began phasing out his leadership of the company. When I was an electronics and computer-industry editor and conference director, I met with and interviewed Jobs on many occasions. He was to technology and Silicon Valley what Washington Irving was to American literature and Hudson Valley — a person capable of extending the boundaries of their profession well beyond what had ever been done before. Apple's website posted Jobs' picture and the following message: "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear …

To school. Anywhere and everywhere. You can even go full Steve and wear blue jeans and tennis shoes." Apple is not involved in promoting the movement.   more ›
