[POLL] Tempers Flare at Rye Council Meeting Over Ethics Review

Instead of calming the waters, the ethics review of Mayor Doug French sparked dissent and accusations between council members at Wednesday's night meeting.

Mayor Doug French and Councilman Joe Sack went head to head at Wednesday night's city council meeting. The Rye City Ethics Board recently responded to the request for review from Deputy Mayor Peter Jovanovich, concluding French did not solicit preferential treatment related to a rental property he owns. Instead of settling the matter as Jovanovich requested, the review did little to silence the mayor's critics or French himself. Eventually, Mayor French openly collided with Councilman Sack from the council dais.

Westchester Students Honored with Excellence in Programming Award

The National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) Northeast Conference declared Westchester Community College's Events Board (WEB) the best student-run programming board in the country.

In addition to its nationally-recognized academic program and grants from Con Edison and The J.M. Kaplan Fund, Westchester Community College recently earned another accolade to add to its litany of accomplishments. Students from towns including Scarsdale, White Plains and Peekskill were awarded with the 2011 Excellence in Programming Award at the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) regional awards ceremony -- a tribute to Westchester Community College as having the best student-run programming board in the Northeast.  WCC's programming board, represented by President Dominick Tedesco and Vice President of Marketing Dali Lu, was honored by judges after demonstrating a multimedia presentation that highlighted their operating …

Men Pay Up This Valentine's Season

New research finds that this Valentine's Day Americans, specifically men, are digging deeper into their pockets than ever before.

They say you can’t buy love, but research shows consumers are spending more than ever this Valentine’s season. According to Mother Nature Network, research from the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates the total spending will reach $17.6 billion, with the average person spending more than $126, up nearly 10 percent from last year and the most ever in the survey's 10-year history. Not everyone will dig as deeply into their wallets, however. The average male is expected to spend $168.74 — nearly twice as much as women — on clothing, jewelry and greeting cards, among other things. Data shows consumers spend the most on their better halves, an average of $74. They’ll also spend an average of more than $25 on their children, parents or …

Making Homemade Sweets for the Sweet

Here's how to make homemade Valentine’s Day 'Krispie Treats' that kids will love to make and give.

Memories of my childhood Valentine’s Days always include piles of paper heart doilies, red and pink construction paper, glue and glitter. I adored creating what I was certain were masterpieces, despite the likelihood I misspelled names or inadvertently created glue globs on my homemade hearts. Though I would love to recreate those memories with my own children, I don’t seem to be raising any crafters. I can, however, cajole them into making sweets, especially if those confections include frosting and sprinkles. This year we are making heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats, decorated with melted white chocolate, frosting and sprinkles. They are incredibly easy and fun to make. First, make a batch of Rice Krispie treats - as per the original …

Recent ATM Incident in Rye Latest in County Wide Problem

The discovery of a stealth ATM skimmer at Rye's CitiBank branch is the latest in such incidents throughout the area and around the country.

Rye Police acted quickly to remove a stealth ATM skimmer found at the Citibank branch on Boston Post Road Tuesday. Lt. Joseph Verille said the device had been there for no more than two days. The department sent a NIXLE alert to warn residents about the incident. Similar events have occurred at Rye bank branches in the recent past including an incident last October 2011; in Harrison last August, in Bronxville last September and nearby Rye Brook in 2010. In fact, last November five men were accused of plotting a county wide ATM skimming operation.  Last week, the New York Times described how the fake devices could be spotted on ATM devices acknowledging the national scope of this criminal enterprise.  Though Tuesday’s discovery was isolated…

[POLL] Handel Resigns Komen Board After Controversy; Nearby Komen Chapter Backtracks

Susan G. Komen for the Cure board member Karen Handel resigns after Planned Parenthood fiasco. Nearby Komen Greater NYC chapter backtracks earlier release.

Earlier today, Susan G. Komen for the Cure accepted the resignation of Karen Handel, vice president for public affairs at the organization since April 2011. After announcing it would withdraw grants to Planned Parenthood, the breast cancer awareness group was forced by public backlash to reverse its decision earlier this week. In her letter of resignation, Handel acknowledged she had a major role in Komen's recent decision to stop grants to Planned Parenthood, but denied the move was based on politics.  Following the announcement, the Greater NYC Komen for the Cure affiliate released a statement that implied its earlier statement of solidarity with the national Komen organization had been less than enthusiastic. Komen Greater NYC released …

SGK had/has every right to fund whom they choose. Donors and volunteers have every right to choose the charities they wish to support. SGK erred in three critical ways. First, it entered the political arena. Whether one is pro-choice or anti-abortion (we are all, I trust, pro-life), I am sure we can all agree that the hiring of Handel and the decision to pull funding from PP on the basis of being…   more ›

Hudson Valley Democrats Score High on Environment

Rep. Nan Hayworth is the fifth highest scoring Republican member of Congress, according to the environmental watchdog organization.

Democratic members of Congress from the Hudson Valley had high marks on the annual New York League of Conservation Voters 2011 National Environmental Scorecard release Tuesday. Both Democratic senators—Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand—had top scores of 100, said Marcia Bystryn, president of the league. "New Yorkers care a lot about our environment," she said. "It should not come as a surprise both of our senators had perfect scores in 2011." In the House, Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, achieved a 97, while Rep. Eliot Engel, D-Bronx, scored a 94. On the Republican side of the aisle in the House, Rep. Nan Hayworth, R-Mount Kisco, was given a grade of 43. "While her score is nothing to write home about," Bystryn said, "her score in the …
