Donate Books for 9/11 Day of Service

A countywide book drive is just one of the service opportunities coming for September 11.

Transforming a day of tragedy into a day of service is an ongoing theme for upcoming memorials this September 11. County Executive Rob Astorino announces a book drive project to add to the growing number of service projects this year.

A program called The Rising will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. In addition to a memorial program at 7 p.m., there will also be a set of volunteer opportunities specifically targeted to honor those currently serving in the military.

Gently used paperback books are being requested for shipment to deployed soldiers. The books can be dropped off at Kensico Dam Plaza next Tuesday and is just one of a number of volunteer events and service projects taking place this year.

“The book collection is part of a collaboration between Westchester County and The Volunteer Center of United Way to promote volunteerism as a way to pay homage to the victims of terrorism on Sept. 11, 2001,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino.

Also on Tuesday at Kensico Plaza, there will be a card making project for deployed soldiers and a food drive to benefit Hope Community Services.
