This Week in Rye Sports: Softball Tension Mounts

Our weekly roundup of sports in Rye.

While the Rye Little League and Rye Girl's Softball season are over for the time being, recreation leagues in Rye and Rye Brook are still in full swing. But the teams are nearing the end of their schedules, making each game that much more important when keeping playoff implications in mind.

Rye Recreation Leagues:

Men's Softball, A League

Rollins Insurance improved to 4-5 on the season in a 13-12 win over T&J's Pizza and Pasta Restaurant. The game made a difference in the bottom of the standings, as Rollins, Poppy's Cafe and T&J's were all tied for fouth place heading into the match up. T&J's fell to a last place record of 3-6 in the loss while Rollins took sole control of fourth place and Poppy's remained in fifth.

Men's Softball, B League

Fourth place Kelly's did just what they were supposed to do against the last place Hammerheads in a 21-9 stomping on Thursday. It was another tough outing for the Hammerheads Tuesday in a 20-5 loss to second place Uncle Henry's. Kelly's won their second game of the week 12-8 over the fifth place 4-6 Roadhouse Regulars.

Men's Softball, C League

M-n-M remained in second place due to a 12-7 loss to the third place Wranglers Friday. Uncle Henry's- Gabelli are close behind them in fourth place at 5-4 after edging Rye Ford 2nd Chance Friday. Rye Ford redeemed themselves, however, in a 26-19 victory over the sixth place Dublin Dodgers Monday.

It will be an exciting pair of match ups beginning Thursday with the third place Wranglers (5-3) taking on fourth place Uncle Henry's- Gabelli. M-n-M (7-3) and the first place Rye Bar and Grill Hackers, (8-2) will take the field Friday.

Women's Softball League

It was a tough week for Rye Brook—the women suffered two defeats in a row to Poppy's Ballbusters (12-3) and the Legal Eagles (2-1). Rye Brook held the Eagles to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but the second place Eagles had a big seventh inning behind a single from Janet Herbold that brought in Glen Westerink and Desiree Mion for the come from behind victory.

The fifth place Hot Shotz are currently on a two game winning streak, with their most recent win—13-8— coming over the sixth place Pub Ryots Monday. F&A improved to 7-0 on the season after routing seventh place Davy Byrne's Rum Runners 15-0. The Legal Eagles and F&A will have a chance to play each other July 19 for the first time this season.

Rye Brook Recreation Leagues:

Mens Softball

The third place GMEN improved to 6-5 in a 16-6 win over the sixth place Foul Balls this week. In other action, the second place QDogs defeated fifth place Sound Shore Productions 12-8.

The annual All-Star game is Sunday at 1 p.m.
