This Week in Rye Sports

Our weekly roundup of Rye sports.

Rye Recreational Softball Leagues are well under way, while Rye Little League regular and post-season games have ended. Champions were crowned, creating a break in the action until tournament team play begins next month.

Rye Recreation Leagues

Mens Softball A League


Jay Dee's continued their winning ways this week with a 6-4 comeback win over Poppy's Cafe and sole possession of third place in the league standings. First place Tony's Legacy edged out fourth place Rollins Insurance, 11-10, in the first game in two weeks due to the weather. Tony's remains atop the standings at 6-2. Second place High Intensity lost 6-5 to last place T&J's. It will be interesting to see what the standings look like next week as Rollins, Poppy's, and T&J's all have a 3-5 record at this point in the season.

Mens Softball B League


Fourth place Roadhouse Regulars have won their last two games, the most recent coming in a 10-7 victory over third place Davy Byrne's who have lost their last two games. First place Rye Liqour improved to 9-0 this week, after winning 11-5 over second place Uncle Henry's, whose record falls to 5-4 and remain one game ahead of Davy Byrnes. Fourth place Kelly's handed the last place HammerHeads yet another loss, 21-9, Thursday.

Mens Softball C League


In a battle of second and fourth place teams M-n-M edged Uncle Henry's Gabelli 14-13 Friday followed by a 21-20 win on Monday. Twelve runs in the third inning helped the Rye Bar and Grill Hackers defeat the winless Dublin Dodgers 18-2 for a two-game winning streak after a 10-9 victory over Rye Ford Second Chance Thursday; the second game of a series between the two teams. The Hackers maintain a one game first place lead in the standings at 8-2.

Womens Softball

Poppy's Ballbusters have earned themselves a tie for third place after defeating fifth place Pub Ryot's 5-2, followed by a 12-3 win over Rye Brook , who also stands at 3-3. The sixth place HotShotz won their second game over the winless Davy Byrne's Rum Runners 19-7. Their current record is 2-4. 

Rye Little League

The Rangers are the 2010 Champions of Rye Little League's Major Division after defeating the Braves 5-3 to finish the season at 16-5 behind good pitching efforts from pitchers Joe Zulli and Matt Shainberg. Zulli struckout five batters, walking none in two innings pitched for the Rangers. Shainberg had six strikeouts and walked two batters in four innings pitched.  The Braves finish their runner-up season at 15-5.

McHugh stuckout three batters, walking three in two innings pitched for the Braves. Johnson struckout out four batters in four innings.

The Dodgers survived a scare from the Athletics to win the Rye Little League Intermediate Championship 4-2. The A's tied it at 2-2 in the top of the fifth before the Dodgers prevailed with two more runs for the victory.

Dodger Pitcher Kenny Nixon struckout thirteen batters in four and two thirds of an inning pitched. Keyshawn Lee Hal had two strikeouts in one and a third inning.

Athletics Pitcher Sean Hager struckout seven batters in four innings. Jamie Clark then came into relieve Hager for one inning, striking out one batter.

Summer leagues and tournament play begin next month with 10, 11, or 12-year old players from each team participating.

Rye Softball

Rye Girls softball has also wrapped up its season, with the Blizzards defeating the Hurricanes 6-3 in the Senior Division championship game. A special award has also been given out to two players in the League.

Senior Division player Leah Myers and Junior Division player Megan Montalto received the Ferguson Award as they have exemplified good sportsmanship, a love for the game and the willingness to encourage teammates.
