This Week in Rye Sports

Our weekly roundup of Rye sports.

High school sports teams in Rye continued their winning streaks this week, while others strived to improve as a team and obtain their first victory of the season.

Rye Garnets

After a dismal 13-0 loss at home to Fox Lane Thursday, Rye baseball bounced back to beat Yonkers and Port Chester Saturday, 9-1 and 7-2 respectively. The Horace Greeley Quakers would then get the best of the Garnets, defeating the team 10-3. A 1-0 win over Walter Panas would be followed by another 6-3 loss to the Quakers. The Garnets currently stand at 4-5. The Garnets hope to reach the .500 mark at Valhalla on Saturday.

Rye softball won one game of out three this week. After a 20-8 home loss to Fox Lane, the Garnets edged Rye Neck 4-3 the following game behind a full seven innings from Erica Becker. The Garnets then lost 14-1 to Horace Greeley, putting the squad at 2-4 on the season.

Rye boys lacrosse split the week, suffering a close 4-3 defeat to Byram Hills Thursday, but bouncing back to demolish Brewster High School 10-1 behind three goals from Jack O'Callaghan. The Garnets look to improve their 4-2 record.

A narrow 13-12 loss to the John Jay Indians would not bring down the Rye girls lacrosse team Friday, who rebounded to crush Eastchester on their home field 16-1. Emma Tucci and Kelly Bonaventura each had three goals for the Garnets in the win. This was followed by an 18-9 victory over Horace Greeley for a 3-1-1 record on the season.

Blind Brook Trojans

It was a tough week for the Blind Brook Trojans' baseball team, who lost four straight games adding to their unfortunate 0-5 start. The first loss came at home to Valhalla, 4-2 behind seven innings pitched by Kevin Goldberg. This was followed by two defeats to Pleasantville and one to Briarcliff, 8-1, 4-2, and 15-6 respectively. The Trojans hope to obtain their first win Tuesday at home against Alexander Hamilton.

The losing streak continued with the Blind Brook softball team. The team had another three losses to currently put them at 0-6 on the season. The Trojans look to improve their record when they host Rye Neck Tuesday.

Blind Brook girls lacrosse was also on the losing end this week against Briarcliff, in a 13-2 loss at home behind two goals from Jenna Paterno. The defeat only added a larger deficit in the loss column for the Trojans who look to win their first game and break their five-game losing streak.

Rye Country Day School Wildcats

RCDS baseball is currently on a four game winning streak after wins over Briarcliff High School, St. Luke's and Brunswick, improving their record to 7-2. The Wildcats edged the Brunswick Bruins, 4-3, then the Briarcliff Bears 7-4, followed by an 11-1 womping of St. Luke's. Next up for the Wildcats is an away game at Hopkins Friday.

After a tough 18-0 outing at Millbrook, the RCDS softball team came back to edge Green Farms Academy 16-15 Tuesday to currently stand at 4-2 as they near the midway point of their season.

The Wildcats boys lacrosse team remained undefeated this week, at 6-0, edging Kingswood-Oxford 8-7 on Saturday along with  a 9-6 victory over conference rival King, Tuesday.

RCDS girls lacrosse split the week starting with a 20-11 loss to Convent of the Sacred Heart on Thursday. The Wildcats then won 12-11 over Holy Child Tuesday. The team's current record is 2-3.

Team chemistry has helped the RCDS boys tennis team be successful this season, leading them to three straight wins in a row against tough conference opponents, including Masters and Hamden Hall. The Wildcats beat Masters 7-0 followed by a 6-1 victory over the Hornets to currently stand at 5-1. Tyler Tananbaum won his No. 4 singles match after being pulled up from doubles play.

RCDS boys golf  had a better week than last, winning two out of their last three meets. The Wildcats beat St. Luke's by a 6-3 meet score, lost to Brunswick 6.5-2.5, but crushed King 9-0 to end the week on a positive note.

The Wildcats girls golf team also made strides this week, sweeping Convent of the Sacred Heart, 3.5-1.5 on Thursday and 3-2 on Monday. This was followed by a 5-0 overall meet score over Hackley to currently stand at 4-1.
