This Week in Rye Sports

Our weekly roundup of Rye sports.

The spring sports season is well underway for teams in the Rye and Rye Brook area. Some teams have won against key conference opponents while others are still struggling to find their way as the season continues.

Rye Garnets

Rye varsity baseball suffered another defeat this week at the hands of the Fox Lane Foxes on Tuesday. The 6-5 loss puts them at 0-2 on the season. Pitcher Christian Fumasoli had only three errors in six innings pitched. The team then lost again to the Foxes on Wednesday in a shutout, 13-0.

The bad luck seemed to travel with the Rye softball team as they also lost to the Foxes, 18-6, Wednesday. Erica Becker pitched six innings for the Garnets, with 14 errors. The Garnets look to regroup against Horace Greeley on Monday.

Rye Boys Lacrosse have won two out of their last three games sweeping a series away at North Shore High School Saturday and Sunday, 10-11 and 9-8, respectively. That streak ended against John Jay High School (Cross River) in a 10-11 defeat. The Garnets' current record is 3-1. Barton Briggs recorded two goals in each of the three games.

After a 13-13 tie against Nanuet on Friday, the Garnets girls lacrosse team beat Somers High School 12-7 Monday to currently stand at 1-1-1. Emma Tucci led the Garnets with five goals and two assists.

Rye boys tennis has struggled as of late, the latest being a 5-2 defeat at home to the Blind Brook Trojans. The Garnets wrap up the regular season on Thursday at Horace Greeley before sectionals.

Blind Brook Trojans

Blind Brook baseball opened their season with a 9-3 loss at Valhalla High School Tuesday to currently stand at 0-1.  Mike Tomasula had one hit on the day for the Trojans.

The Blind Brook softball team suffered three straight losses to start the season, losing to Byram Hills, Bronxville, and Port Chester, 15-1, 16-0, and 17-3, respectively. After good teamwork in the latter part of the game against Port Chester, the Trojans can only improve. 

Blind Brook boys tennis won two of three matches this past week to currently stand at 4-1. The Trojans beat Keio Academy 5-2 but then suffered a 6-1 defeat to the Horace Greeley Quakers. They then bounced back to beat the Garnets 5-2 in a very competitive match.

Trojans girls lacrosse are currently on a two-game losing skid after losses to Harrison and Nyack for an 0-4 start to the season. Melissa Rosenbaum had two goals in the 14-2 loss at home to the Harrison Huskies while Jenna Poplausky tallied one agaisnt Nyack.

Rye Country Day School Wildcats

RCDS baseball had an up and down week. The Wildcats beat King 5-1 Friday followed by a 10-0 shutout loss at Hackley Monday, but rebounded to defeat Masters 25-4 Tuesday for a current record of 4-2. Brunswick is up next for the Wildcats in another pivotal conference Fairchester Athletic Association matchup.

Entering a tough stretch in their schedule, Wildcats softball bounced back to beat King 10-0 on Monday after a 14-4 loss at Master's. This was followed by an 18-8 victory over St. Luke's to currently stand at 3-1.

RCDS boys lacrosse, currently 4-0 on the road this season, won this past week, 12-3 against Portledge Saturday and 10-2 over Greens Farm on Monday. The Wildcasts look to make it 5-0 in their first home game Saturday against Kingwood-Oxford.

After a loss to Portledge, RCDS girls lacrosse suffered yet another defeat to the King school, 14-13, Tuesday bringing their current record to 1-2 on the season.

RCDS boys tennis won their second match of the season 6-1 at home to Millbrook, Tuesday for a current record of 2-2. Losses included cross-town rival Rye High School and Hopkins. The Wildcats next host Masters on Friday.

It was a rough week for the RCDS boys golf team who lost a 9-0 match to Brunswick on Monday. The Wildcats then played the Hamden Hall Hornets to a 219-201 match score and look to improve against Convent of the Sacred Heart on Tuesday.

RCDS girls golf is now 1-1 on the season after beating Holy Child, 4-1, to obtain another key conference victory. The Wildcats will need to have complete focus as the heart of conference play has just begun.
