This Week in Rye Sports

Our weekly roundup of Rye Sports

Rye sports teams had a very eventful week, with injuries and recoveries, easy wins and tough defeats with prominent players out of the lineup.

The Garnets boys basketball team won 2 out of 3 games this week, crushing Leake and Watts on Friday  71-37 and slipping past Sacred Heart High School 48-45 on Saturday for a two game winning streak. Down by only three at the half against Horace Greeley on Wednesday, the Garnets lost by twelve after trailing by as much as 18 and playing without starting center Brendan Nagle in one of their biggest efforts all year. They currently stand at 6-7 on the season (4-2 coming out of the break) as they begin their playoff run. Nagle missed the Garnets' next game, but will hopefully recover and be back in the lineup soon.

The Garnets girls team lost 44-38 on the Horace Greeley Quaker's home court. Lillian McCabe and Catharine Greer led the Garnets with 12 and 11 points respectively. McCabe has had two games in double digits, the last one against John Jay (Cross River) last Wednesday, tallying 18 points in a loss. The Garnets are currently 8-4.

The Blind Brook girls basketball team beat a rebuilding Port Chester squad on Tuesday at home 70-32. The game allowed the Lady Trojans to work on their zone defense as they try to improve their 7-13 record from last season. The Lady Trojans had previously lost to the Westlake Wildcats on Friday 48-34 with Ali Silfen, one of their key players, injured and unable to play. After being out in a 54-50 win against Pleasantville, Silfen returned on Wednesday against a good Briarcliff team in a 47-28 loss for the Trojans. Having a good shooter like Silfen back will surely help the Lady Trojans who currently stand at 6-8 and were one game behind .500 wins on the season before playing Briarcliff.

The Trojans boys basketball team crushed Westlake 70-43, setting the tone in the early minutes after losing to Pleasantville 57-39 the previous contest. Briarcliff would get the best of the Trojans on Wednesday 43-63. Trojan Lance Freundlich, who has been pivotal in recent games, had 18 points on the day. Antoine Saliba and Troy Dubrowsky also contributed with points in double digits against Pleasantville. The Trojans are currently 5-7.

RCDS Wildcats wrestling routed Lexington 45-18 on Wednesday after . They are currently 6-2 on the season.

The Wildcats ice hockey team fared well against a good Hoosac School team on Saturday despite the absence of key players. The Wildcats lost 8-3. After losing their previous two games, the team finally won, beating Harvey 6-1. Currently standing at 4-7, they are nearing the end of a tough stretch in their schedule so things should continue to look up for the Wildcats.

Garnets ice hockey had good performances from seniors Paul Mundinger and Taka Katsuta in an 11-0 shutout victory against Somers High School. Mundinger tallied four goals in the first period alone continuing his great play after posting his 100th career point last week. Other players are following his lead in a great team effort. Roger Holmes had a big game for the Garnets on Sunday scoring three goals during an easy 8-2 win against a weaker defensive Whitesboro team. Other players contributed to the win, such as Mundinger, who has been a force as of late.  The Garnets tied a tougher Cortland Junior Senior High school team the previous day 1-1. Their record currently stands at 7-3-2.

Kevin Fusco led the Rye Town/Harrison Titans with three goals in a 6-3 loss to White Plains Saturday. The Titans are currently on a two game losing skid after a previous loss to Pelham High School, 2-1.

The next week of sports could be crucial for teams in the Rye area as they strive for .500 wins, try to recover from back-to-back losses and continue their winning streaks headed into the playoffs. Stay-tuned for our next recap to see how they did!
