Legal Eagles Beat Rye Brook in Eighth

Hanley's triple in top of eighth scores two runs.

A Kelsey Hanley triple saved the day for the Legal Eagles as Tracy Meyerson and Elyse Byrnes scored to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead  in the top of the eighth after seven scoreless innings.

Janine Carpinello then hit a line drive to bring in Hanley for the eventual 3-0 victory.

"It was solid defense on both sides," Hanley said.

Meyerson played well in the field for the Legal Eagles. The Eagles gave it their all pulling through in the end as Byrnes almost scored in the fourth, but was tagged out by Rye Brook pitcher Lauren Dzilinkski behind the plate.

Katharine Jones was also in position to score in the top of the seventh but tough defense prevented the Legal Eagles from putting their first run up on the board.

Key defensive plays for Rye Brook included Meaghan Maloney throwing to Debbie Jond for a double play at first and second in the top of the fifth.

Amy Low was also a threat at third for Rye Brook along with Dzilinski.

Rye Brook Co-Head Coach Janice Kunicki said that hitting was an issue throughout the day, but emphasized that recreational sports are meant to be enjoyable.

"We usually have hits," she said. "But it's supposed to be fun."

The Legal Eagles usually take awhile to build their momentum in the game, Hanley said.

"It takes us a while to warm up," she said.

It was the same scenario in a game earlier in the season where the Eagles came back in the seventh inning to squeeze past Rye Brook 2-1 on June 24.

"We like our games like that,"  Hanley said.

Dzilinski pitched eight innings striking out one batter and walking three. Rose Marie Hanley also pitched eight striking out one batter and walking none.

The Legal Eagles still have two more makeup games to play before the post-season begins next Wednesday.

The Hot Shotz are up first on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Rye High School followed by a game against F&A on Tuesday at Disbrow Park slated for 6:30 p.m.
