Ladies' Turn: Poppy's Cafe Team Wears Their Crowns

It's not only the guys at Poppy's with a mean softball swing, the women's team took the Rye Rec Championship, too.

Yesterday we got word from Patch reader Steve Massinello that his softball team from Poppy's Cafe had taken the A League Division softball championship at Rye Recreation.

Today, Coach Bobby Piovesan send us the play-by-play from the victorious women's team. The cheekily-named Ball Busters represented Poppy's Cafe well, taking the women's championship. Here's his recap:

The women's softball team from Poppy's Cafe's won the Rye Rec Ladies league.

After starting the season 0-3, looking very lost and then finishing with a 5-7 losing record in fifth place, The Ballbusters started their journey into the playoffs on shaky ground.

First up was the Pub, who last year in the playoffs whipped The Ballbusters 16-7. This year was different. The Ballbusters won the game 5-4 on a last inning play at the plate.

Next up was the team who finished first in the League last time, Frank's Pizzeria.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first inning, the Ballbusters steamrolled Frank's and won 12-7. It was the second time in 3 weeks the Ballbusters had beaten their team.

After the first win against them, I saw my TEAM coming together as one unit. I saw that hungry look in their eyes. I knew then that this TEAM had what it took to go all the way.

Next up was The Legal Eagles, who stood between the Ballbusters and the Championship. The Ballbusters had a real score to settle with this team. The first time we played them this year, the Eagles did what no other team has done in the Ballbusters 25-year history. They GONGED the Ballbusters 15-0.

That wasn't lost on my TEAM and I mentioned it over and over. After two rain outs, it was finally time to play.

The Ballbusters unloaded on the Eagles 13-7 in the first game. The second game started slowly. Down 2-0 in the second inning, The Ballbusters regrouped and scored 5 runs in the bottom of the third. We had them then and there and my girls knew it.

Every time the Eagles would score, The Ballbusters would match them run for run. The final nail in the Eagles' coffin came in the top of the seventh inning.

The Ballbusters– whose motto is: we win as a TEAM and we lose as a TEAM– took the Championship in 2 straight games, reclaiming the trophy they have won 14 times in their illustrious career.

I have never been more proud of a group of women as I am with this team. Given up for dead in the beginning of the year to storm back like they did was more then any coach could ask for.
