Garnets Stay Undefeated

Rye Garnets edge Fox Lane Foxes to remain unbeaten at 13-0.

Tori Virtue led the Rye Garnets field hockey team to their 13th victory of the season against Fox Lane Tuesday, scoring the team's game-winning and only goal in the first half of the competition.

The 1-0 home win over the 8-4-1 Fox Lane Foxes helps the Garnets continue their undefeated streak this season.

The game was in the Garnets' favor the first seven minutes both offensively and defensively. Forwards and defenders were moving into position as Fox Lane's Caroline Bowen missed two shots.

Virtue's score came eight minutes later as junior midfielder Katie Killip passed to junior forward Emma Brinkman who followed up with another to Virtue for one of the Garnets eight shots on goal past Fox Lane goalkeeper Vanessa Darling.

Fox Lane's Aly Dowey and Rye forward Claire O'Callaghan battled it out shortly after, until Brinkman brought the ball back into Garnets' territory for the majority of the first half despite the Foxes playing it to midfield on several occasions.

Five missed shots in the half limited Rye's chances of pulling further ahead as they were forced to settle for a 1-0 lead.

Much of the same happened in the second half, as the Foxes' defense—helped by Darling's efforts at the net—blocked shots from passing the goal line. However, the Foxes were unable to produce offensively, remaining scoreless in the second half and eventually losing to the Garnets 1-0.

Rye Assistant Coach Jen Tramaglini said her players' communication on the field has helped them continue to win games.

"They really gel well together," she said. "It's nice to see that."

Fox Lane Coach Melissa Heyde said her team needs to play more aggressively the next time they face the Garnets, which will be in a home game at Fox Lane Friday.

"[We're] Just looking to play with more intensity," she said.

That game will be the second to last game of the regular season for the Garnets, who then host Horace Greeley in their regular season finale Monday. Win number 14 could come as soon as Thursday against Rye Neck.

In Tuesday's game, Rye goalkeeper Kaitlin Campbell had three saves in goal for the Garnets, and Darling had six saves for the Foxes. The Garnets also missed 12 corner shots on Fox Lane. The Foxes missed two.

Fox Lane next faces Horace Greeley in an away game Monday.
