Lifeguarding class

Lifeguarding teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies at a pool setting only.  Waterfront Lifeguarding option is also available it teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies at both pool and non-surf waterfront settings. Both courses include content and activities to prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.  This course includes training in Lifeguard Skills and First-Aid (certificate is valid for 2 years) and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (certificate is valid for 1 year).


Pre-requisites:  Must be 15 by last day of class


Prerequisite Skills:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously, using both front crawl and breaststroke. 


2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object (with both hands and must keep your face above water) and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

3. Tread water for 2 minutes without support and without stopping, only legs can be used, arms must be placed across chest, hands in armpits.
