Have you ever fired a marine signal flare?  A rocket flare?  A flare gun?

If not, please join us on October 15th from 8:30am to 12:30pm when the Westchester Sail and Power Squadron and the City of New Rochelle Department of Parks and Recreation will host “Flare/Up!” You will receive training in the use of flares.  Also, we will dispose of any of your expired flares so bring them with you.  This is a FREE public event.

“One of the great things about Flare/Up! is the opportunity to compare different types of signaling devices,” said Paul Okura, Vessel Safety Check Examiner.  “You can easily see the difference in height, candlepower, and duration, as the flares arc up, burn, and descend.”

The New Rochelle Harbor Master and Marine Units of the New Rochelle Harbor Police will be on hand to inform boaters of the need for safety.

For further information or questions concerning the October 15thFLARE/UP!, please contact John Steger at 914 472-5520 or jwsteger@hotmail.com

Further explanation: All boaters are required to carry flares on their boats in the event of an emergency.   These expire every three years, and consequently many boaters just accumulate them on their boats.  In addition, very few people ever fire a flare, and in an emergency may cause injury to themselves or damage to their boats.  This event will show people the proper way to fire a flare, while at the same time allow boaters to dispose of expired flares safely.
