The 61st Annual Dinner of the Con Edison Westchester Scholastic Sports Awards were held Wednesday night at the Hilton and Rye Town. Every one of this year’s Con Ed Award Athletes of the Week were in attendance and eligible for scholarships.

Rye’s Torie Virtue was the big winner of the night as she won the Irwin “Red” Scholarship of $10,000. Virtue was a three-sport athlete with stellar grades for the Garnets. While at Rye Virtue played field hockey, winter track &field and lacrosse. She holds school records and next year she will be attending Yale University.

Three players picked up a $5,000 scholarships; Mamaroneck’s track & field superstar Anima Banks, Irvington’s Marley Giddins and Nicholas DeMarco of Yonkers.

Banks is a track & field superstar, who was also a captain for the Tigers during the soccer season and she is one of the best mid-distance runners in the nation. She was named the runner-up to Virtue and next season Banks will attend Duke University.

Marley Giddins won the Anthony Sabella Scholarship. Giddins is a basketball and track sensation who scored over 1,000 points on the hardwood in high school. Next year she will take her jump shot to play for Amherst.

Nicholas DeMarco was given the Charles “Doc” Blanford Scholarship. DeMarco is a sensational pitcher who no-hit Tuckahoe two months ago. Next season the ace will head to Brown University.

 

Today’s Schedule:

State Girls Lacrosse State Semifinals at SUNY Cortland:

Class B, Fox Lane will take on Section 5’s Canandaigua at 2:30 p.m.

Class C, Rye will take on Section 5’ Honeoye Falls-Lima at 9:30 a.m.

 

State Track & Field:

In track & field, the State Championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, at 12:30 p.m.

 

CHSAA Baseball Tournament:

Class AA, Iona Prep will take on Fordham Prep at St. John’s University at 7 p.m. If Iona wins the Gaels clinch the title.

 

Other Sports News:

Empower New York State Football Classic Set for Sunday:

96 of the best football players in the state will square off in the third annual Empower New York State Football Classic, better known as the annual Upstate-Downstate Game.

Several players from the Hudson Valley will be competing in the game.

White Plains To Host Big Apple Shootout:

White Plains High School will host the fourth annual Big Apple Shootout this Saturday at 1 p.m. The 7 on 7 football showcase will highlight several local teams.

 

WRWBL Update:

The Westchester/Rockland Wood Bat League season has been going strong since Mid-May.

Currently the Harrison Patriots lead the league with a 7-0 record. Former Manhattanville outfielder Stephen Pinto is among the team leaders with a .500 batting average, 11 hits and eight runs so far.

The WRWBL picks up with a full schedule of games this weekend.

 

Battle at the Border Set To Begin:

The Battle at the Border premier high school baseball showcase is set to begin this weekend.  Many of the area’s best baseball players will be involved in the 32 team tournament that will be held on eight fields around the Port Chester Area.

Weekly Sports Poll:

The sports poll this week is asking if Justin Combs a defensive back at Iona Prep will be heading to UCLA next season, already his scholarship has picked up national attention thanks to his famous father’s bank account.
