College Sports Notebook:

Rolling along, and nationally ranked

Riding a program-best 14-game winning streak, the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team (25-2) moved up to No. 19 in the Associated Press Poll.
The Bonnies, undefeated in Atlantic 10 Conference play at 12-0, are coming off a 66-48 win over Xavier in front of a Homecoming Weekend crowd. The victory extended Bonaventure’s regular-season A-10 winning streak to 16, dating back to last season.

Junior guard Alaina Walker of Pomona, a defensive specialist out of Albertus Magnus, is averaging seven points and six rebounds per game for the Bonnies, to go along with 39 assists and 21 steals.

The only team in the nation with more wins than St. Bonaventure is No. 1 Baylor (27-0). No. 3 Notre Dame is also 25-2 on the year.
The Bonnies entertain Fordham (11-15) on Wednesday night in their regular-season home finale. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Bob Lanier Court.

Playing for the Rams, who are 6-6 on the road, are freshman forwards Emily Tapio of Brewster, and Liz Milner of Cold Spring and Haldane HS.

Lady Spartans on a roll

Sara Oliviera of Portugal led all scorers with 18 points to lead the St. Thomas Aquinas College women’s basketball team to a key 60-51 victory at New York Institute of Technology.

Briana Sloper of Williston Park and Bianca Kowgios of Yonkers each added 13 points for STAC, who have won seven of their last eight games and gaining momentum as the regular season enters its final week.

The Lady Spartans are now 14-10 overall, and more importantly gained on their next closest foe in the East Coast Conference (ECC) standings, improving to 9-5 while Tech fell to 7-6, with a 14-11 mark overall after their fourth setback in five games.

The victory virtually secures a spot in the upcoming ECC Tournament for STAC, while also improving its hold on one of the top four positions and possible home court in the first round.

The Lady Spartans travel to the University of Bridgeport (8-16, 6-8) on Wednesday at 5 p.m., before hosting Mercy College (3-21, 3-11) to wrap up the pre-tournament portion of the schedule on senior day, Saturday, at 1 p.m.

Playing for the Mavericks of Mercy are Jessica Biggs of Nanuet, and Aysha Williams of New Rochelle.

The ECC Tournament begins on Feb. 29 with first-round action at high seeds and culminates with the semis and finals at Queens College on March 3-4.

Valiant end to Valiants’ season

Taylor Wilson of Pearl River closed out the season with two big games, helping the Manhattanville College women’s basketball team close out a disappointing season with a 74-69 victory over Delaware Valley, and a 66-63 win over Misericordia College. The Valiants finished at 9-15 all told, and 4-10 in the Freedom Conference.Wilson scored 23 points in the season finale against Delaware Valley, hitting two key three-pointers in the final minutes and sealing the win with four free throws in the last 23 seconds.Against Misericordia, Wilson had 19 points, four rebounds and three steals, including one at the end that led to two free throws that nailed down the victory.Wilson ended the campaign ranked sixth in the conference with 14.4 points per game.Due to an injury, Jen McSharar of Garnerville missed the final two games, but also had a productive season. The North Rockland HS graduate was fifth in the conference in rebounding with 8.5 caroms per game, and also scored 7.5 points per game. She was second on the team with 34 steals. Golden Bears move on

Junior guard Damon Alston of New Britain, CT, scored a career high 22 points to lead the Western New England men’s basketball team to a 57-47 victory over the University of New England in the final game of the regular season in Biddeford, ME.

Sophomore Dennis Rinaldi of Harrison was limited to two points in 17 minutes, both well below his season average of eight points and 25 minutes. The center pulled down five rebounds, just one below his season average as the Golden Bears (9-16, 6-12 Commonwealth Coast Conference) earned the eighth seed in the playoffs.

WNE has its hands full tonight when it visits top-seeded Salve Regina (17-8, 15-3 CCC) in Newport, RI, in a quarterfinal round contest of the CCC Championship.

Weekly Sports Poll:

Jeremy Lin has completely taken the world by storm and flipped the NBA upside down. He has inspired music videos and a countless number of “Linisms” and the thought of him moving to White Plains has everyone in Westchester calling him their neighbor. This Friday the league will honor their very best in Orlando as the league takes a break from competition and has some fun with the annual All-Star weekend.

“If basketball careers lasted two weeks then Jeremy Lin is a first ballot hall of famer,” said Wipeout co-host and life long Knick fan John Henson last week on Mike and Mike in the Morning.

Earlier last week NBA Commissioner David Stern refused to add Lin to the All Star Game roster or allow him to play in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, but did say he could be included in one of the All-Star Saturday night competitions such as the Haier Shooting Stars, Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Foot Locker Three Point Contest or Sprite Slam Dunk.

Needless to say after the outcry from the public and the media Stern and the NBA made the smart move to include Linsanity to the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, he will also be competing for New York in the Haier Shooting Stars and he will assist teammate Iman Shumpert in the Sprite Slam Dunk. Not only was Lin included in this year’s Rising Stars game but in the new format General Manager Shaquille O’Neal made him the third overall pick of the contest behind Blake Griffin and Kyrie Irving.

Now as a graduate of one of the top business schools in the country I fully understand the marketability of Lincluding the Linsteria to the weekend, but as a life long basketball fan I have to ask the question, should someone who has only played in 17 of his teams 31 games really be honored at All Star Weekend?
