Daily Sports Digest: Section 1 Championships Decided In White Plains

Basketball dominated the weekend as all the local classes crowned a champion at the Westchester County Center.

Yesterday’s Results:

Sport: Boys Basketball Class AA Championship

Game: Mount Vernon vs. Mahopac

Score: Mount Vernon Won 77-51

Highlights: Mount Vernon won their seventh consecutive section title as Randy Stephens led the team with 19, Jarrel Marshall added 12 and Section 1’s Mr. Basketball Isaiah Cousins tacked on 11. Brendan Hynes was the lone Mahopac player to reach double figures with 13 in the loss.

Sport: Boys Basketball Class A Championship

Game: Tappan Zee vs. Poughkeepsie

Score: 

Highlights: Tappan Zee finished the season with an undefeated record as they beat Poughkeepsie over the weekend. Brian McLaughlin led the Dutchmen with 13, Billy O’Shea scored 12 and Pat Peterson added 11 in the win. D’Andre Smith led Poughkeepsie with 11 points.

Sport: Boys Basketball Class B Championship

Game: Albertus Magnus vs. Dobbs Ferry

Score: 

Highlights: Four players reached double figures for the Falcons and Jack Sullivan led the way with 22 points, Pat McGuinness added 14 while Tyler Sayre scored 12 in the team’s victory. Thomas Fleming led Dobbs Ferry with 13 in the loss and Eddie Ritch scored 12.

Sport: Boys Basketball Class C Championship

Game: Tuckahoe vs. Children’s Village

Score: Tuckahoe Won 80-58

Highlights: Sky Williams and Justin Nolan carried Tuckahoe in the Section Championship game as Williams scored 27 and Nolan poured in 25. Roger Owens led Children’s Village with 11 and Kareem Padgett tacked on 10 in the loss.

Sport: Boys Basketball Class D Championship

Game: Biondi vs. Greenburgh Academy

Score: Biondi Won 69-59

Highlights: A day after winning the championship Section 1 stripped Biondi of the title over the eligibility of Lance McDowdell. Biondi has appealed the ruling and the case will be heard today but as of right now Greenburgh has been declared the winner and will continue in the state tournament.  

Sport: Girls Basketball Class AA Championship

Game: Ossining vs. Our Lady of Lourdes

Score: Ossining Won 79-48

Highlights: Saniya Chong led all scorers with 31 in the victory including the 2,000th point of her career. Destini Walker added 17 points and 14 rebounds for Ossining in the win.

Sport: Girls Basketball Class A Championship

Game: Pearl River vs. Tappan Zee

Score: 

Highlights: Allison Cook led the Pirates in the low scoring affair with 15 points and Christa Scognamiglio added 10 in the win. Erika Richards led Tappan Zee 12 points in the loss.

Sport: Girls Basketball Class B Championship

Game: Irvington vs. Blind Brook

Score: 

Highlights: Irvington’s Alexis Martins led all scorers with 21 points and Brittni Lai added 19 in the victory. Ali Silfen had 11 for the Trojans and Leah Saliba had 10 in the loss.

Sport: Girls Basketball Class C Championship

Game: Hamilton vs. Keio

Score: Hamilton Won 60-24

Highlights: This one was over quickly as Hamilton was up 32 points at half time, Maia Hood led the team with 29 points and Ayanna Behagen added 12 in the win. Sae Toyomura scored 11 for the Unicorns in the loss.

Highlights:  Rye’s Taylor Love finished fourth in the 1600 meter run at 4:25.20.

College Sports Notebook:

Steinberg, Scarlet Knights pull off major upset

Senior midfielder Ali Steinberg of Suffern had the eighth hat trick of her career, helping the Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team upset No. 8 Princeton, 11-10, at Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton, NJ.

Lauren Sbrilli of Martinsville, NJ, a sophomore midfielder, provided the game-winning goal in overtime to punctuate her first hat trick of the season.

“This was an overall team effort,” said Coach Laura Brand-Sias on the Rutgers website. “We had a game plan and the girls did a great job of executing it. This was a great example of what we are capable of accomplishing.”

Senior Danielle Mascera of Verona, NJ, had three assists for Rutgers (1-2).

Junior goalie Lily Kalata of Nessconset came up huge for the Scarlet Knights, stopping a season-high 11 shots.

Rutgers continues its three-game road swing on Wednesday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia to take on the University of Pennsylvania (1-1) at 7 p.m.

Mortarboard musings

• Paul Moreau of Pearl River is a junior attack on the Manhattan College men’s lacrosse team that defeated Providence, 11-9, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale. The Jaspers (1-2) visit Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD, on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPNU.
•  In the lowest scoring basketball game in MAAC Tournament history, third-seeded Manhattan College dropped a heartbreaker to Siena, 34-33, in a quarterfinal-round game at Springfield, MA. The Jaspers trailed by 13 points with less than nine minutes remaining, and had the ball with 13 seconds left. But a three-point attempt by Maggie Blair of Briarcliff was off the mark, as the Saints escaped with their 12th victory. Manhattan finishes at 16-15.

• The Manhattan College women’s lacrosse was unable to find their offense at Gaelic Park in Riverdale as they fell 9-2 to Brown (2-1). The Jaspers (2-3), who were held scoreless in the second half, scored at 19:42 before the break when Chrissy Gutenberger of Stony Point connected. Manhattan travels to New Britain, CT, on Wednesday for a game at 5 p.m. against Central Connecticut State (1-2). Junior midfielder Caitlin Karner of Mahopac has been held scoreless in three games for the Blue Devils.
• Alaina Walker of Pomona had four points, three rebounds and two assists as the top-seeded St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team continued its record-setting season with a 78-52 victory over fifth-seeded Saint Joseph’s in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament. The Bonnies (29-2) advance to the title game for the first time in program history. The Bonnies face either second-seeded Temple or third-seeded Dayton on ESPN2 today at 5 p.m.
