CACC recognizes Chargers

The Dominican College women and Wilmington University men have won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Alfred R. Restaino Sr. Cups, given annually to the institutions that perform best across-the-board in CACC-sponsored sports.

Wilmington won for the third straight year after successful seasons by its baseball and golf programs in the spring.

Dominican took home the women’s cup for the second consecutive year as it claimed the CACC Softball Championship, advanced to the conference semifinals in both women’s basketball and women’s soccer, posted a quarterfinal finish in volleyball and had a third-place showing at the 2011 Women’s Cross Country Championship.

The Chargers’ cross country team featured Sarah Dugandzic of Suffern, Renee Roncace of Valley Cottage, Amanda Castro of New Rochelle, and Amber Lacey and Jessica Avila, both of Mount Vernon.

Sophomore forward K.C. Jentzen of Pearl River helped spark the basketball team, finishing third in scoring (9.4 points per game) and rebounds (5.1), while leading the way with a .475 field-goal percentage. Senior guard Meghan Murphy of Carmel was third in three-point shooting with a .333 percentage.

Scholar-Athletes named

Four players at Dominican College in Orangeburg were named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) all-Academic Team for the spring athletic season. A total of 105 student-athletes from the 14 conference schools across five sports earned a place on the list--five more than in 2010-11.

Representing the Chargers in softball are Paige Berzak of Cypress, CA, Delaney Childers of Johnstown, OH and Julie Plante of Swansea, MA, while Caitlin Murray of Oakdale was named in women’s lacrosse.

Nyack College baseball players Jan-Pierre Crespo of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Mike McConnell of Edison, NJ, joined the distinctive list, as well as the Warriors’ softball player Anna Bailey of Milford, CT.
