College Sports Notebook:

Warriors recognized

The revived Nyack College baseball team, which went 25-25 for an impressive 22-game improvement over last year, placed four players on the all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) team.

Senior Phil Delisle of Quebec, Canada, was named a first-team selection at shortstop.  In his first season with the Warriors, Delisle posted a .356 average with 20 extra-base hits and more than 40 runs batted in.  Delisle also stole 12 bases.

Senior JD Calabrese of Paramus, NJ, and freshmen Kris Chatman, a second baseman, and John Kennedy, an outfielder, both of Fort Lauderdale, FL, were named to the second team.

Calabrese, a first baseman, had his best collegiate season in his final campaign, finishing fifth in the CACC with a .357 average with a team-high three homers.

Kennedy was also selected as the CACC Rookie of the Year, after batting .344 average, with more than 55 stolen bases (second-most in NCAA D-II), and more than 40 runs.

Coach Matt Cornacchione was selected by his peers as CACC Coach of the Year.

Bittersweet

They reaped every major East Coast Conference (ECC) award, but the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College closed out a rousing baseball season with disappointing 4-3 losses to Dowling College and the University of Bridgeport in tournament play at Provident Bank Park in Pomona.

Among the many school records the Spartans set was the single-season mark for victories in their 34-18 campaign.

Junior shortstop Frank Salerno of New City was named the ECC Player-of-the-Year, senior Matt Marotta of Suffern was Pitcher-of-the-Year, third baseman Stanley Susana of the Bronx earned Rookie-of-the-Year kudos, and veteran mentor Scott Muscat was named Coach-of-the-Year.

Salerno, a graduate of Clarkstown South HS, was second on the team in hitting with a .365 average, and knocked in 34 runs to tie for second with Nicholas Barbalato of Mahopac. Salerno also kept STAC on the run, stealing 40 bases in 44 attempts.

Marotta, a Don Bosco Prep alum, led the staff with a 8-2 mark and a brilliant 1.94 ERA, while Susana, a graduate of Cardinal Hayes, hit .363 with 30 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts.

Mortarboard Musings

  • Nyack College freshman Chelsea Macaluso of Charlotte, NC, received honorable mention status on the all-CACC softball team following a rookie season in which she batted .301 with a team-high 12 doubles and 19 RBI. Macaluso also pitched more than 135 innings, totaling 87 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.97. As a team, the Warriors earned the conference’s sportsmanship award.
  • ·      The seventh-seeded Iona College women’s water polo team earned seventh place at the NCAA Championships with a 12-8 overtime victory over eighth-seeded Pomona-Pitzer at the Aztec Aquaplex on the campus of San Diego State University.  The win marked the first NCAA Championship victory in program history. “I just turned 40 a couple of months ago and I feel like I just turned 50 or 60 after that game. It was a tough game. It was kind of like our entire season,” Coach Brian Kelly said on the school’s website.
  • Tickets are available for the Colgate University men’s lacrosse NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at PPL Park in Chester, PA. The Raiders, including senior team captain Kevin Gordon of Rye, a defenseman, will be facing No. 3 seed Duke in the second quarterfinal of the day. Fans can purchase tickets by calling Comcast Tix at 1-800-298-4200 or visiting the Comcast Tix Website. The tickets allow fans entry into both games. General admission tickets for the game are priced at $22 and, if purchased over the phone, fans can request to sit in the Colgate Section. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the gate.
