The football game between Rye and Pearl River was a truly a story of different programs. Dino Garr has made the postseason 18 straight years at Rye. Not too shabby when you consider Garr’s starting quarterback is a freshman who wasn’t even alive for the first few years of that streak. For Pearl River the playoffs are new and unexplored territory, and while the Pirates would have loved to win their game their head coach knows that just making it to the postseason was a huge victory for the program.

“Going forward it’s great,” said Pearl River Head Coach Jeff Michael on making the playoffs and the role it can have in developing the program. “There are 27 teams in Class A football. We are one of eight to make it in. I guarantee there are 19 teams that would trade places with us in a heartbeat. You have to be in it to win it and we were in it. Mentally, it’s a step in the right direction.”

As for the game itself, Rye won in the rain and as the grass turned to mud the Garnets relied on Joe Simolacaj to be a key factor. Rye went to a ground and pound running game, winning 14-7 thanks to some big runs and a costly Pearl River tipped pass that was intercepted by Rye and returned to the 1-yard line.

Other Rye teams will be in playoff action this weekend as the Garnets host Pelham’s boys' soccer team today, and Rye will head to Byram Hills in volleyball. On Saturday, the girls' soccer team from Rye will host Ursuline.

Blind Brook teams begin action tonight as the third seeded boy’s soccer team hosts Valhalla and the seventh seeded volleyball team welcomes in Briarcliff.

Saturday will also be a big day in Trojan athletics as the defending state champs Bronxville will host the 6-1 Blind Brook football team. The school’s girl’s soccer team will also be in action as they take on Dobbs Ferry.
