The Top Spot:

The Catholic Youth Program began after the second World War to give the boys coming home something to do, tonight the program will show how much it has evolved as they will host the 66th annual tournament at Our Lady of Mercy School on Washington Street in Port Chester. For the fourth year this tournament will be in memory of former chairmen William R. Gallagher.

Today the tournament acts a showcase for some of the best high school players in the nation and in the past NCAA tournament heroes like Kemba Walker, Lorenzo Charles, and Bobby Hurley have played in these games, even hall of famers like Chris Mullin, Larry Brown and Steve Young (yes that Steve Young) have graced the court with their presence.

“Some of the kids you’ll see this year, you will be seeing next year in college and in the pros,” said tournament chairmen Joe Bellofatto.

Pelham Community Rowing Association Raises Wraps-Up its Winter Training in Spectacular Style!

Pelham Community Rowing Association (PCRA), has just wrapped up its winter season with its First Annual Ergathon on Saturday, March 3rd in Glen Island, NY.  Challenged with raising $20,000, rowers completed a 90-minute marathon on the indoor rowing machine, the ergometer.  Almost ninety rowers rowed 1.5 million meters in total while their parents, siblings and PCRA’s Masters (adult rowers) “erg-ed” them on!

PCRA’s rowers from more than 10 area middle and high schools surprised even themselves by raising a whopping $34,800!  As a result, the Club is purchasing two brand new, state-of-the-art, hand-laid, carbon fiber racing shells. The purchase of these shells could not come at a better time as PCRA is experiencing explosive growth, doubling in size in just the past two years.

To consolidate the teams’ growing reputation as a national powerhouse, PCRA athletes spent the winter training hard indoors on ergs and at the gym doing cardio and weight lifting circuits. Twenty six PCRA rowers competed in the 28th C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships, the world’s largest and oldest such event, held at Boston University’s Agganis Arena on February 19th.  During the all-day event, 2,300 competitors from all over the world raced against the clock on ergometers.  Rowers competed for the fastest times in their age groups and weight class over a 2,000-meter distance.

In the highly competitive Junior Women’s Open-weight class, Yasmine Hemida, a senior at Mamaroneck High School, took 18th place out of a field of over 200 competitors, with an outstanding 2K time of 7:28.  This was no surprise as she had handily won USRowing’s satellite indoor ergatta, the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, held at PCRA just the week prior.  Hemida was recruited to row next year for Syracuse University.

Just behind her in the same race, was Harrison High School Sophomore Liliane Lindsay, who had taken 2nd place at the Massacre, while placing 26th at the C.R.A.S.H.-B’s, with a time of 7:32.

Scarsdale High School senior Ian Klein, claimed first place in the men’s lightweight event at the Massacre, and an equally impressive 22nd at the C.R.A.S.H.-B’s.  Klein will be rowing for Harvard University’s lightweight program next year.

This coming spring, PCRA Youth will be competing at several regional regattas as a warm up to the highlight of their rowing season, The New York State Scholastic Championships.  They are looking for their best showing ever, as well as hopping to qualify several crews for the USRowing Youth National Championships, held this June in Oak Ridge, TN.

College Sports Notebook:

Mustangs advance in national tournament

Aiviah Parham led all scorers with 16 points to power the Monroe College women’s basketball team to a 52-49 victory over Prairie State, 52-49, in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II National Basketball Tournament in Peoria, IL.

Parham, of Baltimore, MD, also had a game-high 12 rebounds as the ninth-seeded Mustangs overcame an early 12-point first-half deficit to defeat the Pioneers.

The defending national champion Mustangs take on top-seeded Johnson County Community College tonight.

The Mustangs (28-6) had two players in double figures, led by Parham, the 2011 Region 15 player of the year, and sophomore guard Kashay Barnes of Fredrick, MD, who was crucial down the stretch.

Barnes went just 3 of 16 from the field but made a huge contribution at the free-throw line, going 5 for 5 including the last two points that put Monroe up by three with just seconds left

“It wasn’t our best game, but we were able to focus, play hard and we never gave up down the stretch” head coach James Robinson Jr. was quoted as saying. “I'm proud of the way our team responded in the second half; this team shows no quit and is determined to win it all.”

Mustang Men Fall in Kansas
