The On-Deck Circle:

Baseball fans in general and New York Yankees fans in particular—who might be looking for a wonderful Father’s Day gift--should consider making time either on Thursday night or Saturday afternoon, or both, and visit Books & Greetings at Northvale (NJ) Square Shopping Center off Livingston Street.

Hall of Fame scribe Bill Madden of the New York Daily News and Moss Klein, who also covered the Yankees of George Steinbrenner for the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger during the many reigns of manager Billy Martin, will be on hand at 7 p.m. to sign copies of “Damned Yankees, A No-Holds Barred Account of Life with ‘Boss’ Steinbrenner.”

On Saturday at 4 p.m., the well-regarded public relations dynamo and prolific writer Marty Appel, the former Yankees PR director who spent many years in Larchmont and whose children attended Mamaroneck High School, will sign copies of his latest book—No. 18 on the hit list, a definitive, incredibly researched, riveting 640-page treatise on the fabled Yankees franchise (published by Bloomsbury USA). Appel will be joined by former big-leaguer and ex-Yankee Ron Blomberg, who owns the signature distinction of having had the first at-bat as a designated hitter in Major League Baseball.

Appel, who became a producer of Yankees TV telecasts and director of Marty Appel Public Relations (www.appelpr.com) after his stint as PR honcho, is a man of many words, and though he has lived in Manhattan since 2003, still has close ties to Westchester and Rockland counties.

“It (Larchmont) feels like ‘hometown’ to me,” Appel said. “We spent 20 years there, but I also lived in Brooklyn, Queens, Riverdale, and went to high school in Spring Valley.”
