Strong Showing for RMS Back to School Night

Parents and staff have great expectations for the new school year

The parking lot was filled to capacity as parents of Rye City Middle School’s upperclassmen came out in droves to attend its annual back to school night last week.

Parents arrived to a standing room only area where they mixed and mingled with other parents of 7th and 8th graders, picked up a new school directory, purchased school spiritwear, supported RHS athletics and fueled up on assorted sandwiches, grapes, cookies, and coffee.

RMS school principal of 14 years Dr. Ann Edwards was present to give parents of the upperclassmen an overview of the new school year.

“We are off to a fabulous start, we love your kids and we have great plans for this school year,” said Edwards. “We have a lot of new teachers, they are fabulous people. The kids have a variety of opportunities available to them that you don’t often see in public schools so thank you for your support.”

One of the unique educational opportunities available to students at RMS include a course called CSI: Rye - a forensics course taught on the school’s campus. While manning the spiritwear table, Raquel Frenchman detailed her expectations for her daughter, a RMS 6th grader, who is currently enrolled in the CSI:Rye class.

“I’m expecting my daughter to grow independently and to really be in control of her education by the choices she makes with her extra-curricular activities,” said Frenchman.  “I’m very excited about how the school is set up into teams. The kids learn teamwork and how to work effectively with others.  The opportunities here are wonderful, more than just your basic science, math and geography course.”

At RMS excelling, growth, achievement, and teamwork provide a sound curricular foundation for students to build their lives on. Allison Rodilosso has a child in seventh grade at RMS.

“We are look forward to a lot of strong academics this year. But, this is the first year that the kids can participate in sports and try out for various teams. My daughter is on the soccer team but maybe we will give squash a try later.  We'll see how it goes,” said Rodilosso.

Parents have great expectations for their children and so do teachers. Fourteen year veteran and seventh grade English teacher, Peter Goveia, anticipates a lot fun things for his students.

“Everyone has got a lot of great energy and is really enthusiastic.  I am looking forward to a great year with dynamic curriculum and getting the kids motivated about learning different things in new ways,” said Goveia. “RMS is an awesome place and I look forward to teaching these wonderfully talented students.”
