Rye Students Reaching Out to Sandy Victims

A press release from the City of Rye School District.

A number of students, staff members and parents in the district have been involved in efforts to help the people are places that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

The REACH committee collected winter coats for children in the Rockaways. Osborn families contributed items such as blankets, undergarments, toiletries, diapers, and gift cards to a Sandy Donation Drive for the New York Foundling organization.

Osborn parents also brought donations to Long Beach and collected clothing and items for residents of the Rockaways/Breezy Point. Several Rye Middle School staff members and families came together to volunteer for a “Rescue the Rockaways” effort, bringing a bus, pickup trucks, and a U-Haul filled with donations.

At Midland School, Mrs. Rosado’s fourth grade class and Mr. Boyum's kindergarten class held a canned food/goods drive to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Families of children in both classes were extremely generous in donating an abundance of nonperishable food items, which were later brought to Stew Leonards in Yonkers where they were matched and distributed.

These are just some of the many initiatives that have taken place over the past month. Rye continues to find ways to help those in need during this holiday season.
