Rye City School District Names 2 New Assistant Principals

Ellen McDonnell was promoted from her position as math department chair of the high school. Robert McKiernan is joining the district in the high school's guidance department.

The Rye City School District announced today the appointments of two assistant principals, Ellen McDonnell and Robert McKiernan.

McDonnell was promoted to Assistant Principal with a focus on grades 6-12 mathematics after serving for two years as RHS's math department chair. She will be based in the middle school in her administrative position, the district said, but will continue to teach two high school math courses.

"I am looking forward to working with the excellent educators we have in the 6-12 mathematics program to improve student learning and increase opportunities for student growth," said McDonnell.

RHS Principal Patricia Taylor said McDonnell has been "instrumental in working with the math department in the use of technology."

McDonnell holds two masters degrees in education and teaching from Cornell University and The College of New Rochelle. She has been recognized as a Who's Who in American Teachers and awarded as a First Year Teacher of the Year for New York State.

Joining the school district is McKiernan, who was hired as the high school's Assistant Principal for Guidance and Student Support Services.

McKiernan previously worked in the Carmel School District in Putnam County, where he was a social studies teacher before being promoted to Dean of Students. He holds two masters degrees from Fordham University and has 17 years of experience in education.

"McKiernan is excited to be a contributor to the college admission process as he assumes many of the duties of coordinating the process with the guidance counselors," said Taylor, who formerly held the position. "I am excited to introduce him to the community as well as key contacts at colleges."
